SCE Santa Monica has no intention to milk God of War

Tomorrow the God of War trilogy is expected to come to an end — and with it, the end of Kratos. We’ve traveled through many lands over the years with the Spartan of choice and he has been the inspiration of many cosplay enthusiasts throughout the world. However, the team behind the legend has no desire to milk the franchise through the likes of spin-offs.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer.be, Senior Level Designer Chris O’Neill stated, “Well, we are delighted with the warm reception we received. We really wish that the franchise can go further and live in the hearts of the people.” O’Neill added “Last thing we want to achieve is twenty spin offs.”

Still, as we previously reported, God of War III is not the end of the IP as far as Sony Santa Monica is concerned, but it’s certainly the end of the trilogy. Though it’s good to know that we won’t eventually be expected to play a ton of lousy spin-off titles like Dirge of Cerberus through the God of War universe. Is this something you guys can agree with or would you actually like to see a bunch of spin-offs of a franchise like this regardless of whether it hurts the quality of the series or not?

Totally agree on it and although I have no idea how the trilogy ends, I wouldn’t mind seeing a game be set in the not so distant future of the God of War universe where Kratos’ actions somehow directly affected the lives of these new people for the next game. Different setting, different mythologies involved but all interconnected to tell yet another involving tale. Can’t wait to see whatever it is they come up with because they have a bunch of talent that should not be put to waste after this.

  3. Aww…I wanted to see God of War Wars, and God of War STD, and God of War Reach…

  4. That’s too bad. I respect that but I’ll still crave for more. I know I will. Just like when Dirge of Cerberus came out. I played it even though it sucked just because it was FF.

I think it would be kool if a new hero rose up to take on Kratos. or maybe not..cuz we all know Kratos would skin him alive. Damn! it’s really too bad.

  5. hell no!
i rather see the series end than see it being turned into dj hero or halo wars

  6. I think that is one of the best decisions I have heard from a game company. Not milking a franchise, that is gold. I want it to end and I want it to end well and it seems like it will be that way.

If they do have a side story that they think is really cool or would help in the overall story, I have no problem with a spinoff, but it has to be well thought out and not just made. Like Kratos’ brother??

  7. It’s always great when you can go out on top… something I wish, say, The Simpsons could’ve learned a few years ago, lol. Also, I just got my email from Amazon saying that my Ultimate Edition has been shipped, so hopefully no one expects anything out of me tomorrow. 😛

  8. I’m with Blinky on that Norse God of War.

As long as they can continue making additions to the game and keep improving it, I’m all for as many God of War games as they can put out. It’s why I love Halo so much. Yea, there are a ton of games, but each one feels fresh and fun, and they do make improvements. If God of War stays on the track it’s on now, then I wouldn’t mind a few more God of War games.

  9. cool there it least wont be shitty spinoffs

  10. I don’t think they should do spin-offs. I was talking to my friend yesterday about this same exact thing. I think the Halo franchise is dead, and Microsoft is trying to weed out every last bit they can from it. I don’t think God of War should go in the same direction. As odd as this sounds, them NOT milking the franchise will give them more profit than they would if they did milk it. Perhaps doing ONE more God of War with Kratos (aka him working for Ares) may work to their benefit.

  11. by odin’s raven there better not be! but i have a feeling that they will anyways…seeing the route MGS and KH games have taken :/

  12. even though i would like some spin offs i think its better they work on sumit new and not spoil the great image of god of war. New ip maybe god of war style would be okay

  13. I don’t personally subscribe to the notion that you can “hurt” a trilogy or series of great games just because they bring out a spin-off title… even if said spin-off title is a load of old guff. Final Fantasy VII is still the same classic title – it never became a *bad game* the moment Dirge of Cerberus came out. The 0’s and 1’s on those three great PSX CD’s didn’t magically alter overnight. So yes, on the chance that they may make a really cool GoW spin off… or even a really cool GoW 4 game itself, chucking out the trilogy idea altogether, I say go for it!
