So what the hell was this game? It was a fighting game on a 2D plane featuring 3D character models. It seems that academic settings were quite the hot spot for fighting enthusiasts in the PS1 era.
While the game wasn’t bad, I kind of wonder who the market for this was, exactly. After all, the two Mutant Academy games came out in 2000 and 2001, well after a multitude of much better games from Capcom featuring the X-Men: X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, and both Marvel vs. Capcom games came out before either game. I suppose there may have been some rabid X-Men fan that demanded to play with Toad, but that seems like a stretch.
NCAA Basketball (SNES)
OK, this one’s a joke. In retrospect, the game’s a bit, um, terrible, but I spent countless hours playing this game with my brother as a kid, so there. Seeing that infinite blue void where a crowd should be just plain warms my heart. But seeing as this is 2010 and you whippersnappers demand the latest and greatest, let’s go with the only NCAA-licensed game still in production.
NCAA Football 11
This is obviously a lot like EA Sports’ flagship Madden franchise, but there are plenty of things to set it apart from its NFL counterpart. The most obvious difference is that the NCAA Football franchise doesn’t leave cover athletes ruined in its wake.
The biggest difference that affects what happens in the game is that you’re in a much different environment. It’s all about being the big dog on campus, where you can build up your player to later import into Madden. Or you can create an entire school from scratch and build it up into a powerhouse.
Either way, it’s much more fun than leaving your dorm and getting work done. I’d tell you to get off your ass and correct that, but let’s be honest – you’re much more impressive in-game than you are in real life.
So that’s a handful of schools that don’t suck, thanks to video games. I can’t shake the feeling that I’m forgetting something, so why not remind me below?
Persona 3 Portable has some interesting school elements too. Although you either hate or love the game, just like any other RPG xD
@Dreamer_Lion — I wanted to include Persona, but I don’t know anything about the series except for the school elements and didn’t want to talk out of my ass, lol.
Nice picks. I remember playing an indie game called Math Sniper where it gives you a math problem, and a bunch of kids with numbers on their faces run out of a school and you have to shoot the kid with the answer on his face. Fun times. ;D
