Best Gaming Trailers of 2010

2010 is just about wrapping up, and it’s been a hell of a year for games. Somehow, the forecast for 2011 is looking even better, with a ridiculous cornucopia of awesome ready to invade your living areas.

As a result, we had quite a few trailers to hype up these releases. A couple of them are for games that released earlier this year, but most of them are for next year’s tsunami.

So without further delay, here are our ten favorites, in no particular order.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Adventure Trailer

While the release date at the end of the trailer is no longer accurate (the game will be out next month), everything else seen here is absolutely heart-warming. From the bouncy song to the seeing gameplay additions such as bounce pads and power gloves (no, not those Power Gloves), the game looks like it’s going to eclipse the original in every conceivable way.

If you poo-poo this game because it seems too kiddy or because “I’m not paying $60 to build my own game”, then you’re missing the point and it’s ultimately your loss. Feel the whimsy, dammit!

Mortal Kombat Kratos Reveal

This is a twist that no one saw coming, yet at the same time it totally makes sense for Kratos to make an appearance in the new Mortal Kombat. Well, more sense than in SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny for the PSP, anyway. After all, the Ghost of Sparta is well-known for the merciless mutilation of his foes, and in this game he’ll be right in his wheelhouse.

I don’t know about you, but this trailer multiplied my excitement for a game that I was already giddy about; I can’t wait to see what kind of brutal fatalities they come up with for Kratos.

Star Wars: The Old Republic E3 2010 Trailer

So this isn’t a PS3 game, or even coming to consoles for that matter. Hell, I’m not even a big fan of MMOs or Star Wars. I can, however, appreciate some epic epicness. Sure, the game won’t play at all like what you see in the above CG trailer, but it’s one of the better action sequences that I’ve seen all year. For that alone, it earns a spot amongst the other trailers on this list.

inFamous 2 Gamescom Trailer

Speaking of action-packed, the above trailer for inFamous 2 takes a totally different approach to convey the madness within the game. With the camera zooming around still frames of a city in chaos while House of the Rising Sun plays in the background, it manages to be exciting without beating you over the head with a ridiculous sensory overload. It’s a quiet confidence for a game about a guy with electric superpowers, but it’s a direction that I wouldn’t mind seeing other developers take.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception VGA Reveal

The absolute biggest reason to watch the abysmal VGAs this year, without question. Sure, we got trailers for Elder Scrolls V and Mass Effect 3, but no one told us those would be at the show. The presence of this trailer at the show was shouted from the rooftops days before the show.

  1. What about the debut trailer for The Elder Scrolls V? An epic voiceover backed by what is most likely Jeremy Soule’s masterful music.

Eh, maybe I just liked it a lot because I was really excited for it even before its announcement.
