Core gamers are Sony’s #1 priority

Core gamers may have felt a little left out last month during E3’s Kinect presentation and that’s something that has baffled Sony and quite frankly, surprised them. In fact, it’s no surprise that Sony has recently stated to the Telegraph that core gamers are the company’s number one priority in the industry.

While this may not come as a surprise to some, I was always under the impression that Sony wanted to deliver to all styles of gamer more-so than just one. With its eclectic lineup of titles, I’d imagine that Sony was always focused on delivering a family gaming experience that appealed to both the casual player and the core gamer.

Kaz Hirai, however, explained recently exactly what type of focus Sony is currently taking: “We’ve always believed that whatever it is we’re doing, it’s something that appeals to our core gaming audience first and foremost,” SCE worldwide boss Kaz Hirai told The Telegraph.

“Then, depending where we are in the lifecycle of the product, how much we need to appeal to the casual and family gaming market varies. When we first launched the PS3 three four ago, the games that were launched along with it were tailored more towards the hard-core gaming audience.

“Four years into it, we’re still not mid-cycle, but given the base growth we’ve seen – there are upwards of 36 million PS3 consoles sold worldwide right now – we are starting to tap into the casual and light gaming users.

“But we want to make sure that we have software that appeals those gamers without neglecting the hardcore gaming audience who have always been the real diehard supporters of PS3. That’s the balance we struck in our [E3] keynote press briefing, I think.”

What do you guys thing? Should Sony continue to focus on the core gamer or branch out more to the casual crowd?

PR talk? Of course he’s going to say they’re more focused on the core gamers. Casual gamers are probably not the people that will be reading these quotes and he wants to assure, especially after Microsoft’s press conference at E3, that Sony is not abandoning the core gamer. I think software will speak differently once the Move is out, especially if it becomes a success and not a quickly dying fad for the PS3.

  2. well i see myself as a hardcore gamer
but i also enjoy playing casual games with my friends and family

while i do agree with sony that their consoles are mainly for gamers with adult taste
i cant deny that its also the best place for casual gamers as proved by games like kingdom hearts, rachet and clark, spiro and litle big planet

  3. Good for them for staying with their core gamers unlike Microsoft, who’s putting all of its eggs in the casual basket.
