Three weeks ago, Rockstar’s Dan Houser said that he thinks the current slate of game consoles “have done everything you can imagine,” implying that the PS3 and Xbox 360 have peaked from a technical standpoint. Battlefield 3 producer Alexander Gröndal, however, sees plenty of potential growth in the systems.
During a live online Q&A session, a fan asked if they thought the current gen has given all it has to give or if new consoles would be needed soon. Gröndal replied, “When it comes to technical stuff, there’s tons of stuff to do on the existing consoles. Tons of stuff we want to do, but didn’t have time to do. I still think there’s room for a lot of improvements on these consoles. I’m not worried about their performance right now.
“It doesn’t make sense to change right now. Right now we see more potential in the current generation.”
For the time being, it seems that Sony’s plan for a 10-year console cycle are still on course. However, with the PS3 just turning five and rampant rumors of a new Xbox, we’ll see how long that attitude really lasts.
