E3 2010 – The Top 10 Announcements

8 – PS3-exclusive content for EA’s best multiplats

Only hours after the above announcement, Activision rival EA revealed that their two most-anticapted games not named Madden will be launching with special editions exclusive to the PS3, both of them well worth picking up.

As with the Dante’s Inferno Divine Edition before them, both Dead Space 2 and the Medal of Honor reboot will come with extra goodies for PlayStation fans to enjoy. Dead Space 2’s special edition will come with the former Wii-exclusive Dead Space: Extraction, which will offer PlayStation Move support. As for Medal of Honor, that will come with a remastered version of 2002’s critically-acclaimed Medal of Honor: Frontline.

While combined sales for Dante’s Inferno didn’t set the world on fire, it’s worth noting that sales of the game were slightly higher on PS3 — a system waiting for God of War III the very next month.

7 – Criterion take Need for Speed back to its roots

If you spent as many hours playing the original Hot Pursuit on PS1 or Hot Pursuit 2 on PS2 as I did, then this is probably one of your favorite announcements to come out of E3 as well.

The man from Criterion (to whom I want to send a gift basket) described exactly what made those games special to its fans in the first place — driving exotic cars in exotic locations, as well as the thrill of the chase. This magic was mostly lost when the series went Underground after the release of Midnight Club and The Fast and the Furious movie before it. Soon we were driving neon-colored Hondas through ugly alleyways, and while EA tried to recapture some of that magic with Most Wanted, it just wasn’t the same.

EA began their conference in the best way possible, by simply playing the trailer for the game before anyone even came out to speak or address the crowd. The journos on hand went understandably nuts, and why not? This is being handled by the developers of the ultra-fun Burnout series, which absolutely ate Need for Speed’s lunch with the release of Burnout Paradise. With these fine men and women at the helm, we’re guaranteed the same spectacular crashes and damage models that made the Burnout series so much fun.

When this drops November 16, I know I’ll be ready.

  1. Gabe at Sony’s Conference and Twisted Metal. The only announcements ever that gave me goosebumps and I was in awe.

The Nintendo 3DS along with Kid Icarus: Uprising is probably the best surprise of the show for me. While I expected the 3DS to be there (I was surprised by the software lineup though, WOW), I never expected Kid Icarus to make an appearance. What a nice surprise to see Pit making a return! 😀

I agree with most of the list here… well a few I simply don’t care about such as CoD. Curious about Kirby and the LittleBigPlanet influence. I not once got that impression from the trailer and both are games I enjoy. Is it because of the yarn? 😛

  3. @Vof — Yup, pretty much the yarn, lol. It’s definitely not a rip-off by any means, but I get the feeling that the Epic Yarn devs like them some LBP. 😉

    @Joe Garcia

    Haha, well this’ll surprise you.

  5. @Vof — Well, then. o_O

Though I’ll just stick to my guns and say LBP’s success showed Nintendo that people would dig a Kirby game like that, lol.

  6. Gabe Newell announcing Portal 2 on the PS3 was a pretty pleasant surprise.

what is so good about portal 2? i thought its just a puzzle game . everybody is hyping it up more than anyother game at e3 so why is it so special!

  8. @Doominator — Sounds like you never played the original. It was simple and superbly written.

More importantly, the major aspects of Steam making their way to Sony’s console is a huge deal, as detailed in the article.

  9. I do believe that de ds was the best announcement. Not in the showing of the but the games that could potentially come:

Juts that tech demo for Zelda ocarina of time and Starfox 64 deserve a FTW. That honestly made me want to buy one, just for all those 64 games (assuming those are ever released).

  10. Where is the new redesigned xbox360…. that was a pretty big annoucement

  11. no one expected the portal 2 thing
especialy after 2 years of valves bulshit about the ps3
