Gamescom 2011: Resistance: Burning Skies announced for PS Vita

During the PS Vita portion of their Gamescom media briefing today, Sony announced the existence of Resistance: Burning Skies. The title is being developed by Nihilistic Software, developers of the recent PlayStation Move Heroes, with help from Insomniac Games.

The game takes place before the events of Resistance 2, and puts players in the shoes of New York City firefighter Tom Reilly. In the game, the Chimera are just getting around to invading the United States’ east coast, and what was shown was pretty impressive.

Burning Skies seems to take full advantage of the Vita’s hardware. Not only do the dual analog sticks make playing a first-person shooter comfortable on a portable device, but the touch screen allows players to “paint” over the screen to throw and cook grenades, as well as quickly access your melee weapon via a virtual button on-screen. As a firefighter, your melee weapon is naturally a fire ax.

There’s also a cover system that allow players to stick to cover by simply crouching next to low objects, and you’ll be able to peek around by tilting the device.
