If you read my impressions write up over the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo, then you know where I stand on how fun the combat is. The lead designer for Reckoning, Ken Rolston, in an interview with Gamefront, had his own opinions on the combat. Though possibly a little biased (being the game’s lead designer), it will be interesting to see how his opinions pane out when the full game is released.
The former lead designer on Morrowind and Oblivion of the Elder Scrolls series (quite a track record) had this to say about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning’s combat:
What makes Reckoning differ from Skyrim? The simple answer is that Reckoning has the best, coolest, fastest-paced, most tactile and silly-exciting fantasy combat of any video RPG.
The pace, fluid movement, tactical richness, and physical and visual theatre of fantasy combat has always seemed the weakest feature of video RPGs, and Reckoning offers a fresh new answer in that department. There are a couple of other obvious contrasting features, like Reckoning’s more vivid, colourful art style, and easy-to-pick up, faster-paced gameplay in general.
With my short time with Reckoning, I may not go as far as to say the combat is “the best,” but I can say that I had a blast and it is extremely fun and rewarding. Remember to check out the demo on PSN if you haven’t yet, and look for the release of the full game on February 7 next month.
