Latest Nier trailer isn’t kosher

Disappointing is the one word I’d use to describe the latest trailer from Square Enix for its upcoming game, Nier. Considering Final Fantasy XIII and Resonance of Fate (End of Eternity) release in March and have both received quite good reviews, Nier has a big steps to follow in, in April.

However, as excited as I was for Nier, this trailer has kind of left me a little underwhelmed considering the SE name tied to it and the RPG drive that has been going on thus far this year.

I’ve included the trailer below and would love to know if you guys feel the same way or if you’re still excited for this one.

  1. I’m more excited for the story after seeing this, but every new trailer I see makes the game seem less and less like an RPG and more like a hack and slash game. I don’t want to play Dynasty Warriors again in NieR.

This is actually the first I’ve heard of Nier and it doesn’t look so bad. Not sure I’d call it disappointing compared to Final Fantasy XIII (I honestly don’t know enough about either to make such a call) but it does look like it has potential. Of course it’ll probably just share the same fate as other Square Enix games this generation for not having the same type of quality as their main franchises.

What ever happened to the statement they made a while back about sticking to the main guns (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts) and practically ignoring everything else? I thought I remember them saying that around the time they released The World Ends With You and to not expect “new” games from them anymore. Unless Nier was already in development by that time but crazily enough, TWEWY stands out as one of the best games I’ve played. I hope to see them take more risks like that one in the future and not always pump out the same stuff.

  3. It seems like a hack and slash because it is one. The battle system is pretty similar to Drag-on Dragoon, and the story will probably be told mainly through cutscenes like it as well.
If anything, it makes me want the game more.

  4. Well I’m definitely still very excited for this game, and I’m not sure exactly what in this trailer did you see that underwhelmed you? Graphics?

  5. Is this an rpg like final fantasy??

  6. Game looks great. However, in hack n’ slash games, GOWIII has spoiled us.

  7. no competition with god of war 3

  8. I’ve never heard of this game, and the trailer doesn’t exactly sell me on… whatever the hell it is. I got this weird Shadow of the Colossus vibe from it, but with a creepy Jack Skellington wannabe and some chick’s boobs thrown in. It also seemed very brown.

    Meh.

  9. The combat doesn’t really intrigue me. The game looks alright, except everyone in Replicant looks cross-gender and the protagonist in Gestalt looks like Kratos skinned Dante from DMC and is wearing his skin.

Is it just me, or does Japanese make game trailers even cooler?

  10. *sigh* another meh game….im wanting to get some more info on versus xiii and agito!

Seems like an alright trailer, but its emphasis was too much on the girl, There were several close ups of her breasts and miniature mini skirt. Since its in Japanese I’m guessing the intended selling point oft this game is supposed to be the story but I don’t ee where its truly heading, Overall I think its just going to be an okay/decent game, nothing to get hyped over.

  12. Idk about you guys, but for some reason I think this game is going to end up with good review scores when it releases, and if it doesn’t just come back to this same article and say my opinion is garbage lol…but I seriously think this game is going to be good. Although this trailer doesn’t do this game that much justice, it doesn’t do it any harm either, well….it depends on how high your expectations are :P.

  13. never been a big fan of rpg’s but the trailer made be interested. Characters looked poor however and they will def be big competion from ff13 which does look good

  14. @TRF, you are almost right on the cross-gender thing. I don’t know why people keep forgetting or haven’t heard, but the main girl in this story is a Futanari. You know, a D***girl; a Hermaphrodite. Something about her being teased about it as a kid so she grew up a tomboy that dressed sleezy.

In any case, you can’t say the story isn’t original and the story would be the only real reason I’d play it. The battle system doesn’t interest me.

  15. SE has lost it, their last hopes are Kingdom Heart 3, FFvs13. Neir I dont know ow many ppl will be interested in this game, instead of this game they should have invested in FFVII remake.
