Officially unveiled and demonstrated at GDC in San Francisco, Sony’s motion controller for the PlayStation 3 has made an impact around the development community and has no doubt prompted both positive, negative and ambivalent responses.
Peter Molyneux of Lionhead Studios is a man who has of late had great experience with motion control technology, working very closely with the Xbox 360’s Project Natal. Speaking to Eurogamer, the renowned developer commented that he currently doesn’t believe Sony’s PlayStation Move is as big a step forward as Microsoft’s controller-less technology, but he’d still like to get his hands on it.
“I have seen some of it [PlayStation Move]. We’re not really surprised, are we? I mean at E3 last year we saw they were having a wand, and that’s kind of what I expected. It looks like they’ve taken a step forward but it’s not as big a step as something like Natal, I don’t think.
“This is purely me talking personally, but I think maybe it’s slightly more a device for the core than it is for the casual market, because I think it’s quite precise.
“As a designer it’s another one of those things I’d love to get my hands on and to play around with. As a consumer, everyone’s talking about motion control now – I mean, I’m starting to get confused. It’s kind of like the arms race, with the Wii MotionPlus and now the Sony Move and now I’m getting kind of confused.”
In the end though Molynuex admitted that the success of each new technology was down to the developers and the software they create, adding that it’s “down to what us poor old designers do with this stuff, because all these guys do is make the hardware. Whether we utilise that hardware in a real way or whether we just take shortcuts, that’s really going to be where we succeed or not.”
The PS Eye is the same thing as Natal. Do these devs not realize that the Eye was created back during the PS2 and it did not work very well. Now Sony sees the motion controller working, so put the Eye and the controller together and you get the most precise and probably the best out of the motion thing going on.
I think Natal will be very limited imo, like the PS Eye was. Unless devs can really get creative and make something amazing using Natal, but from my opinion, Natal will not be all that amazing. I could be wrong though.
Maybe not, but… at least it works…

come on guys!
its Peter Molyneux!
anithing that comes out of his mough is a highly questionable promise/statment
Yeah right…Natal is a step back to Eyetoy standards !!
I’m not into motion controls, unless it works for hardcore games. I prefer the traditional controller over motion control anyday.
I don’t think it matters which one is the bigger step… I personally don’t see either one catching on that well, no matter how much Sony and Microsoft put behind their products. They’re just trying to cash in on Nintendo’s success for being a totally new approach to gaming. Do they expect to somehow tide them over to their console? Sony says they’ll have the Move bundled in with a console but who will want to buy what will most likely cost around 400$ just to get a HD Wii experience? I think it’s already been proven that consoles don’t need HD to be successful. Even the PS2 was outselling the PS3 for a while. Huge library of games and cheaper.
Either way, it’ll be interesting to follow this considering the support both companies are putting behind their product. Nintendo was sure underestimated when they revealed how they’d enter this generation of console gaming.
From a PR standpoint, it’d be dumb for him to say that PS Move is in any way superior to Natal. I do agree with his comments at the end, though- the success of these products lies mostly with the developers.
ummm this is coming from molyneux so i wouldnt say this man is anywhere near credible lol
Peter Molyneux . . . let’s see . . . he develops a game series exclusive to the 360 and has been known to blow things way out of proportion.
Yup, he’s a rock-solid source.
Well, Natal is a step forward guys, even though its like the playstation Eye. It may not be surprisingly accurate but it sets up for future iterations of non-controller based consoles. Much like how Move is just a highly accurate Wii Mote. Molynuex is kinda of right Natal took a bigger step then move in terms of innovation, but Move mastered true 1 to 1 motion tracking XD
i think there both a failure personaly. but i think move will have more sucsess than natal. if u tead a article on ign(link on commet #2) they said natal dont work
wow Peter Molyneux what a great man to talk to about technology of consoles[/sarcasm]
anyways the PSEye is basically the Natal Already and the thing I like about Move is that You actually hold something and It has a lot more potential than Natal
btw Controllers on consoles 4 Life
natal may be a bigger step foward but nothings ever pefect first time. the playstation move may not be totaly new but its working perfect now unlike natal.
Peter Molynuex has always been a big talker, and never delivered.
Since you all pretty much came to the same agreement. I can safely say that PS Move is much more exciting. Peter Moleneux is Lame and exaggerates way too much. Natal is only taking something that already exist an spicing it up a little. Sony is in a way doing that too but they’re really bringing out the guns ( Pinpoint precision, Great looking Games, 3D, )
So Yeah. Moleneux needs to really work on his games and stop criticsizing SONY. He’s a microsoft Fanboy fo sure.
PS move isnt a big step as natal but move will be soo much better for games than natal and thats what i care about. not some expenisve gimick
