After Markus “Notch” Perrson expressed his interest in helping fund the development towards Psychonauts 2, as well as stating that the budget for the original was no problem in his eyes, fans and enthusiasts reacted as you might expect, with jubilant anticipation and excitement. However, it appears that this project is not quite on its feet yet, nor is it really even in the works according to Notch, who felt he needed to set the record straight with giddy fans.
According to Notch, his recent tweet to Schafer about funding Psychonauts 2 was only partially enthusiastic. As Notch said, “I semi-jokingly tweeted Tim about me funding a sequel.”
Further more, Notch also says that Schafer and himself have only communicated through “a couple of emails” about the subject. He also stated that the “budget for doing a Psychonauts 2 is three times higher than my initial impression.”
It seems that the hype from Notch investing in Psychonauts 2 has gone from what seemed to be a mildly serious agenda, to no more than a half-hearted jest. It could also be that Notch bit off more than he could chew with volunteering to back the project, and with fan reaction.
Notch also mentioned that he would not be in this as a charity, only as an investor who can make a profit, and that other parties are interested as well. This should come as no surprise, but it still all seems to be a lot of backpedaling. Or perhaps gamers just blew a small tweet out of proportion. What are your thoughts?
