Out goes PlayStation Arc, in comes PlayStation Move [CONFIRMED]

PlayStation’s motion controller is reportedly moving its title from Arc to Move, in a trademark switch-a-roo.

Sony has registered PlayStation Move in Europe, which could potentially be the final name of the PlayStation 3’s imminent motion control solution. In our previous articles on the technology we’ve used its in-development name PlayStation Arc, which was also registered in Japan not that long ago.

PlayStation Move was registered yesterday in Europe alongside a description reading; “Game controllers for consumer video game consoles for use with an external display screen or monitor and attachment devices,” which means that it’s likely that the name is in reference to a new controller. The only new PlayStation controller we can think of is Sony’s motion controller, which is rumoured to come with a wireless Wand and an optional ‘nunchuck’.

What’s slightly confusing is that the logo included in this article’s title image was also submitted in the trademark application, which correct us if we’re wrong, looks much more like an ‘A’ than an ‘M’. Perhaps the controllers will jointly be known as PlayStation Arc, but the PS3’s motion-controlled games will be under the heading of PlayStation Move titles? Who knows.

We got in touch with Sony to find out what the monkeys was going on, but we were told that we’ll find out soon. And indeed we will, as Sony’s GDC press conference starts in under half and hour.

[UPDATE] – Sony has confirmed at their GDC pres conference that the motion controller will be named PlayStation Move. The starter pack, including the PlayStation Eye, the controller and a game for under $100. Sports Champions is one such title, including a number of games (think Wii Sports) in the package, such as Gladiator Duel fighting and table tennis.

[UPDATE 2] – The optional ‘nunchuck’ controller is known as the PlayStation Move ‘sub-controller’…catchy. You’ll be able to play through SOCOM 4 from start to finish with the PlayStation Move controller and its sub-controller.

  1. I guess we’ll see. Hopefully they’ll reveal more than just the official name for this.

I like Playstation Move… better than Arc for sure. But I didn’t think of the logo as an “A” but simply meaning that it’s a “move” as in it was quickly drawn with the wand. Graffiti or something :p

  3. I think “Playstaion Move” sucks. Actually, I believe Playstation Motion Control ys just better: it’s plain and simple and it delivers the message fast.

Arc is quite good too. That move thing reminds me of dance dance revolution =/. . . .

Playstation Move Doesn’t sound right, to me…. Arc definitely sounds better. I guess Sony wanted to create a name that relates to the functioning of the device =/
Hopefully they change the name. First it was Gem, then Arc, now Move.

Just confirmed at GDC that it’s Playstation Move!

  6. Apparently a PS Eye, Move, and game will be under $100. Which probably means $99.99.

  7. should have been named arc thats sounds better than “MOVE”

So now its Playstation Move, Its a decent name I guess…. Better then Gem at the least… Now we have to know how much it costs =/

  9. Wow, I thought the Arc was a pretty cool name. I guess Move is more consumer-friendly. Oh, well, at least it’s not the Gem.

  10. Move ? GAY

  11. Doesn’t sound that bad.

BTW, playing Socom 4 with this could be good if aim is better than the Wii’s.

  12. @Thorzilla – But SOCOM worked just fine with a regular controller, so I don’t see the point. I don’t know if I’m too cynical about motion control, but I just hate hate hate everything about this so far.

  13. looks great. and all thses games arent even close to done!!!

i loved that areana fighting, and socom is a opianal thing…… and i will try both

  14. Lower the price a little, please Sony! I rather spend that amount on new games.

  15. @imlastboss: im with you! lower it to like 80 😀

also…i totally called on the gladiator arena thing (the E3 09 demo)….now only if they had that RTS tank game 🙁

still sweet tho! im looking for a release date!

Ha, our mock-up was just right =D

  17. all those creative minds at sony and all they can come up with is “move”. CLEVER

  18. I can’t wait. That price sounds good to me. I have high hopes for you SONY. Don’t let us all down. We want Innovation, we want the best. Don’t give us another gimmick!

  19. hey PSUniversity, a crap load of info on the Move was released….care to make an article on it?

to be at the top youve got to get the info first, baby!

  20. Kotaku went crazy on PS Move tons of info on it, by the way nice its under $100 with cam, but one tiny request to sony please include that “optional controller” too Nunchuck, if u want remove the game, i want to play Socom with it.

  21. But ultimately its what they put the mark on, really. Cool mark but the product is what drives the sales.

  22. yeah, im pretty sure theyll have damn good games on there….that is unless SE and all of them just make damn ports of iphone/touch games and stuff :\

hopefully SE makes a nice game….and Konami as well (hopefully kojima will turn to this as well…not MGS, but a new game…)
