No — the title of this article is not a joke nor is it incorrect. Gamers in Japan will soon be able to play their PlayStation 3’s outside of the house and pretty much anywhere they’d like to. Some of you may remember those old LCD contraptions that you could hook onto your gaming console in order to play anywhere, well, they’ve designed one for the PlayStation 3.
Japanese peripheral company, Hori, has created a 720P LCD that attaches to a PlayStation 3 slim allowing for portable gaming. The peripheral is officially licensed by Sony and is set to release in Japan on May 27th for $276.
Of course, nobody in their right mind would haul their PS3 around to play on the bus or on the go, but it would come in handy to have around the house if everyone is hogging the TVs, right?

whats the battery life like?
I know we’re talking about two different markets(Japan and NA), but for a product that falls under one company, I wonder where they get these ideas. Even though the Japanese have a much stronger PS3 market, we always hear about 360 VS PS3 sales in one group, and the PS3 is behind. There is always talk about Sony actually losing revenue, yet they waste money on something like this rather than consolidating the money in one area, the PS3 itself. It’s the same thing with the PSP.
I want one for this summer, Imagine playing ps3 while you’re having a bbq!

Do they even lose money on this? It’s made by Hori so they’re probably the ones paying for the development costs of this, not Sony. At least that’s what I’m assuming here…

Uhh, well it being cheaper than the PS3 is totally irrelevant here. The peripheral itself costs 273$. I assume the PS3 still has to be bought separately :p Unless if you meant something else entirely but that’s what I was getting from your comment.
That’s pretty cool. I could play my PS3 on my desk at home if someone is hogging the TV. I like this idea, I hope it comes to America.

We’ve used a portable DVD player with video input capabilities and a PS2 on vacations, and it’s very nice to let the kids have game time without depriving everyone else the use of the TV in the hotel. I’d welcome this for the PS3 … but not if the U.S. price is anywhere near Japan’s $264. The PS3 itself retails for $299, so I think the better pricepoint would probably be between $99 and $150. Even if it’s full HDMI connected, it shouldn’t cost almost as much as the console itself.

Hori created the actual product but it’s being licensed by Sony. If the product flops(which it probably will), Sony will still have to pay any royalties to Hori for what ends up being sold, plus other managerial assets such as advertising, hence the point of Hori obtaining the license. If anyone thinks the peripheral will do well next to the actual console at the same price…
wow never thought it would be possible, if it has a battery it must last like 10min lol. gd idea though if u have no tvs available and great to take round friends. certainly helps towards the ps3 does everything, its even portable lol

DAYUMMM…I know a lot of people might not want or need it, but this works for me perfectly considering my weekly schedule and situation involving going to other places. I’m buying this, great thing I’m already going to Japan this summer too. $276 is definitely a difficult purchase in this case, but it is understandable considering it’s a portable LCD screen.

I don’t know much info on that screen, but as u put it ” the peripheral is official licensed by Sony” then in that case Its HORI that would be paying royalties to SONY, Just to use the PS3 tag. in technical terms The licensee (HORI) may use the trademark without fear of a claim of trademark infringement by the licensor (SONY)
