Portal 2 Announced, Secret Message Unveiled [UPDATE 3]

Portal 2 has been announced after being teased within a sly patch to the original game. Valve today revealed a sequel to the 2007 game, further including a secret message.

Could the PS3 be alive for a Portal sequel? The original was included in The Orange Box, where the PS3 port was created by EA; a product that Valve has expressed regret over. Since then Valve has been developing for the PC and Xbox 360 only. Portal 2 has now been announced and though platforms have yet to be revealed, there must be some hope that the game will come to Sony’s console.

In other news, Valve’s announcement on Steam News includes a number of underlined letters, as can be see here:

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Half-Life) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Portal 2 for shipment this coming holiday season.

Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007’s Portal, which won 70 industry achievement awards.

When compiled, “Dr Attmann” and “h0nee” are revealed, which we believe to be a username and password. And with the help of the fine folks at Reddit, here’s a Pastebin of the results when inputting this data in a Bulletin Board System. What it unveils is too much for us to investigate, so we’ll leave that to you.

[UPDATE] – These images have been revealed from this login data, one of which suggests co-operative play:

The game, which is coming this holiday season, also features on the front and back pages of the upcoming GameInformer Magazine. In the images you’ll be surprised to notice exterior landscapes, presenting the possibility that Portal 2 is very much a combination of Portal’s sterile interior environment and the serene landscapes of Half Life. Could Portal 2 in fact be Half Life: Episode 3?

[UPDATE 2] – Valve’s Doug Lombardi has told Eurogamer that the game is coming to the PC, Mac and Xbox 360. Of course, there’s still an outside chance of a PS3 port, though we wouldn’t keep your hopes up.

[UPDATE 3] – Gamestop reveals more information on the game and its co-operative multiplayer:

“Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game.

“The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.”

  1. It probably won’t be on the ps3 but that would be great !

  2. Well, remember valve said something about wanting to go back to work on ps3 or something like that?. It may very well be Portal 2.

  3. The message is so confusing, but have to admit i hate Valve with a passion, and will not support anything from them* I think portal was the best game in orange box (PC). Well let see if this lands up on PS3 or not (looking at valve fuming)

Co-operative play just about confirmed…but also the sad news that it’s Xbox 360 and PC only (at the moment)

  5. Dissapointed 🙁

  6. They need to make and put Half-Life 3, Team Fortress 3 and Portal 2 in The Red Box or something. That’d be like the greatest thing ever!

  7. Nice. Never played the first, although I’d love to.

  8. 2 questions – why no ps3 development from valve? any bad blood? and Where the f*ck is episode 3? iguess 3 questions but TEKA TAKU – I like the way you think man

  9. me to id love to play this game, though i never played the first 😛

  10. I want it on ps3! Its a fun game but shame valve have to be so lazy :(. Get your thumb out and at least port it to the ps3 again. Maybe same release date would be nice as well?

  11. I loved, loved, LOVED Portal. Can’t wait for the sequel.

This is pretty cool, as to what Patrick Steen said, its only for 360 and PC, which is a bit disappointing, but right now Ps3 has a stomach full of games right now, and It is actually taking awhile to get through them all, Portal 2 would probably be better on PC anyways.

  13. portal….CO-OP???

    THIS IS MADNESS!!!

I’m probably one of the few that didn’t enjoy the first as much as I thought I would, considering all the hype around it at the time. With that said, I’m still looking forward to its sequel, assuming it ever releases on the PS3. Didn’t one of the employees at Valve recently try and make up for all the PS3 hate? They even admitted that Orange Box was a crappy job, haha. Hopefully they are interested in porting it over and not by just quickly handing it out to EA so they can screw it up again.

  15. Plan on getting this for PC as with all valve games.

  16. man its too bad that this isnt coming out to the PS3 🙁

  17. I don’t know what the fuss is all about Portal? I don’t really care about part 2 or Valve, IMO.

  18. It probably won’t come to the PS3

  19. @M.n.M: i thought it was already confirmed not to be on the PS3

meh, i dont care too much about this anyways….this is about the only thing im interested from valve lol

  20. Moocows111111 March 5, 2010 @ 20:33

Guys, everything from Valve is nearly always better on PC then on Consoles. Since we have Media Molecule to the Sony Family then we are all set anyways, in terms of innovative games.

  21. I lost any care that i had for this game, now this game is non existence for me. Valve who?

  22. Patrick Steen March 6, 2010 @ 13:32

    That’s a shame.

  23. It really sucks that this doesn’t seem to be a part of the PS3’s future. The first game is one of my all-time favorite games, and seeing that Game Informer cover has me super-giddy. I can’t wait to read about it when my GI comes in.

  24. Valve = PlayStation haters…. Hope it comes on PlayStation 3, because i really don’t want to miss Portal 2. And I’m not buying a XBOX 360.

  25. i hope its beter then the first one wit more levals the first one was awsome

  26. Hi there colleagues, how is the whole thing, and what you wish for to say on the topic of this post, in my view its actually amazing
    in support of me.
