The title above may not be entirely accurate, but the PlayStation 3 is the only current Blu-ray player referenced by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). The ability to support the new specifications, which requires sending a Full 1080p image to each eye, may be beyond most players currently on the market.

Today the BDA announced the final specifications for 3D Blu-rays, showing their intent to release 3D content in 2010. Victor Matsuda, chairman of the BDA committee, comments:

Throughout this year, movie goers have shown an overwhelming preference for 3D when presented with the option to see a theatrical release in either 3D or 2D.

We believe this demand for 3D content will carry over into the home now that we have, in Blu-ray Disc, a medium that can deliver a quality Full HD 3D experience to the living room.

Specifications for Blu-ray 3D include the requirements to deliver 1080p resolution to each eye, that they will work with all 3D compatible TVs and that the discs will be backwards compatibile with current 2D players by including a 2D version of the movie.

However, Sony’s PS3 is the exception to the rule, since the BDA further announced that the “Blu-ray 3D specification is also designed to allow PS3 game consoles to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3D.”  It was previously thought that HDMI 1.4 would be needed to support the format, but it now seems that the PS3’s HDMI 1.3 will suffice. It’s also surprising to hear that the PS3 will be able to project two 1080p images to each eye simultaneously.

Blu-ray 3D will use the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, which will also allow new graphical features, including 3D navigation menus and 3D subtitles.

As for 3D gaming on the PS3, Sony has already said that they will be pushing hard to introduce 3D games in 2010/11, so expect this Blu-ray development to rocket that movement forward. For now we’d look forward to watching Avatar in 3D on your PS3 very soon.
