PS3 outsold 360 by 4 million in past 12 months

So with the announcement of Sony’s latest financial results came an update on the console sales race. As reported in a previous story, the gap between the PS3 and Xbox 360 is now only 3.6 million units. But how did the PS3 achieve it? We’d thought we’d update our comparison to Microsoft’s financial year.

Last week I told you that the PS3 had already outsold the entire Xbox 360’s 2010 fiscal-year sales with three months to go. Sony has now reported those three months as being a higher than expected 2.4 million units. Although Sony and Microsoft run on different fiscal years, it’s certainly interesting to look at the past 12 months.

During Sony’s fiscal-2010 year (April 1st 2009 to March 31st 2010) the PS3 sold 13 million units. But in the past 12 months, the PS3 sold 14.3 million units. That’s in comparison to the Xbox 360’s 10.3 million units. The PS3 sold a whole 4 million units more than the 360 in just 12 months.

Quite the feat and if it continues (the Xbox 360 S and Kinect are wild cards) the PS3 will have sold more than the Xbox 360 by the first half of 2011.

Microsoft’s Fiscal Year Ended June 30 2010

——- Q1 — Q2 — Q3 — Q4 — FY — LTD

360:  2.1 — 5.2 — 1.5 — 1.5 — 10.3 —- 41.7

  1. tsk….tsk I wonder what excuse the xbots will give right now. “bu….bu…BUT VGCHARTZ said 360 was outselling PS3!11one”….LOL!!! Must suck to be an xbot right now. It’s only a matter of time before PS3 outsells the 360. I suspect GT5 and KZ3 will ultimately boost the PS3 ahead of the 360 by Spring next year.

  2. Sweet! The rich get richer!

  3. lol i remember debating about which console is best in like the 8th grade in computer class, everyone in there were a bumch of xbots and i was like one of the few people who said the ps3 was best, those were fun days.

  4. It’s hard not to buy the PS3 when it offers the best value this generation.

i think it will catch up because of move, all the highly anticipated games and because of the increased ammount of advertisments. in the uk i have seen more PS3 ads than xbox ads which is suprising

  6. Only in gaming are the sales numbers used as some kind of point of pride among the fans. Its disgusting.

  7. @lol cakes: when I was in 8th grade we were debating ps1 vs… nothing, all there was in the universe back then was the mighty ps1. And no debate was necessary. Poor new generations, condemned to endless dlc’s and squeaky bad shaders.

Yeah, are you speaking for Microshaft’s Greenberg & his PR department , media buyed-out journalists like VGchartz, IGN, Gamespot, Eurogamer, Digital Foundry, etc, and for its legions of xbotrolls?

They are the ones who started this crap numbers crap to sway people!
So many smart & opinionated gamers reacted to their mis-information war.

FYI, no one talked about sales figures during the PS1 & PS2 era or even the 8-bit or 16-bit era because Japanese companies are honorable enough not to go down this level of MicroShaft and also no gamer gives a flying f!
All we cared about was games back then.
Game tips and tricks. How to play games. Games, games, games.
It just so happened that PlayStation brand had lots of anything for everyone that’s why Sony dominated.
Now MicroShaft has de-virginized us gamers’ innocence and turn many of us into smart business analysts.
Now many gamers are more concerned about rumors, stats, competition, what is the best & numbers and more numbers & figures … than appreciating good game details anymore.
Beauty of games do not resonate anymore to many gamers.
After playing a game many gamers spend more time to gaming sites and concern themselves about sales. crap.
This system needs to stop. Many gamers are held from buying games and games are not tried by biased journalists and their biased journalism.

  9. problem is for microsoft is they only care about america, they crap on every other country, esspecially the UK,were u look at sony and they treat everyone equal,or as close to equal as they can, most of the xbox 360’s selling points are america only, they bang on about loads of stuff and the update comes and its like OH another for US only!
i have had a ps3 and the downloading form store and stuff was mega slow(i got 50meg) and it had problems with freezing all time so i sold it,bu i plan on getting another this year as it has the best games and im so happy devs are giving it the support it needs now,
i play on 360 at moment, but miss my ps3,i miss bluray too.i just wish os3 would support .MKV native,it would gain so many sales

  10. Good for the PS3… but who cares????
