RAGE now more stable on PS3 than Xbox 360

iD Software’s RAGE is set to be one of the best looking video games of all time when it finally releases. The studio is targeting a 60 frames-per-second framerate on all platforms, but in 2009 the studio’s head, John Carmack, admitted that the PlayStation 3 version wasn’t up to scratch at only 20-30fps. In 2010, things have changed.

In 2009 Carmack explained that RAGE was running at 60fps on both PCs and the Xbox 360, with the PS3 lagging behind at less than half that framerate. However, the development team explained that they expected the same solid 60fps framerate across all platforms. Such an achievement is rare on the current generation of consoles, let alone for one of this generation’s best looking games.

Worries about the PS3 version should now be put to rest, with the game’s lead designer Tim Willits telling Eurogamer at a live demonstration that RAGE is even more stable on the PS3 than on the Xbox 360 version. It was the 360 build that was on show at the demonstration, a demonstration where the game ran fast, “seldom if ever dipping so much as a toe below the 60-frames-per-second watermark.” So to hear that the PS3 build is finally up to scratch is good news, even if we’ll have to wait until 2011 for the game to come out.

There was also some question as to how many DVDs the Xbox 360 version will ship on; two or three. iD has now managed to cram the game onto just two DVDs, but whether this has had any negative effect on the game at all is currently unknown. RAGE releases for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC next year. You can find a new set of screenshots for the game in our RAGE gallery.

[UPDATE] – The game’s senior producer, Jason Kim, has added context to the original comments on the game’s performance, telling our friends at Shacknews:

“The reason why that was said was, and it should’ve been set up a little more, to really elucidate the fact that we have both platforms running at sixty frames, and they’re both performing really well.

“It’s not like the PS3 is ten times faster than the 360, or the 360 is much better than the PS3. They are different platforms, but we’ve got everything running on both.”

Never heard about this game. I hope it’s not “just another FPS” but instead brings something new to the FPS genre.

    • such an idiot saying hes never heard of it and then says brings something new like how theyve advertised it. lmao what a joke.

Its makers invented the FPS genre with DOOM. The game combines first person shooter, with racing and open-world.

I heard about this game, but not too interested in it. By the looks of the screenshots it seems like a pretty decent game.

  4. For sure the gameplay will be great and obviously the graphics too, but ID is not known for good stories and that is a MUST for me, well maybe they hired a good writer this time…i wish!!!

hmm, never heard of this one. I look forward for some preview on e3 2010

  6. More interested in Doom 4 tbh, bring on QuakeCon 2010.

  7. According of the “Three Red Lights Podcast” (IGN.com) Episode 143 this game has amazing AI and already looks really great. Better than the games out on the market for the moment. Really psyched for this after the AI description.

  8. Looking forward to Doom 4 more. I wonder if 2011 is the year of the multiple disc 360 games? God I love my PS3

  9. I’d like to see this game head2head with Killzone 3. Both games look fantastic. 2011 is going to be a sweet year for PS3 gaming. Took them long enough lol.
