Ratchet & Clank a little “different” in Japan

Living in North America, Ratchet & Clank has always been the same for me. A great platformer with slight puzzles, wild weaponry and dialogue that is suited for all gamers. It’s a great franchise that despite its many iterations continues to be a cornerstone for the young and old alike. While some may argue that it deserves to finally die off, I disagree and hope they continue to provide a family gaming experience from top to bottom. However, one thing I never knew until just last night is how different Ratchet is to the Japanese than he is to the rest of the world.

You know how they say everyone has a twin somewhere out there? It’s almost as though the Ratchet being released in Japan is the doppelganger of our dear Ratchet from America and Europe. I’m not sure if I’m alone here, but are any of you else aware of this? I’ve included a Japanese trailer below — let us know if you can spot the difference.

Did you see it? If it’s still out of your grasp or you’re just completely terrible at the “Spot the Difference” game, I’ve included a trailer from North America below.

Please tell me that you’ve figured it out by now! Of course you have. Isn’t that a little quirky to you? Let me know what you think about the difference below. I’d love to hear your opinions on it.

  1. bushy ratchet?

  2. lolwut? Is that how it was for ToD? This doesn’t even make a little sense to me, though I found it pretty damn funny when I saw it.

  3. Lol, the eyebrows.

  4. 1. the japanese have a release date
    2. their version is called Rachet and Clark future 2 a crack in time
and 3. Rachets eyebrows are black in japan

  5. lol wtf is up with the ancient dialect they using! Who wants to play a game that you can’t understand…

  6. hm, i don’t know about you guys but i think their own to something with them big black bushy eyebrows….

  7. The eyebrows are crazy and the voices just dont match!

  8. Yeah they mentioned this on the Full Moon Show before ToD released, I can’t remember why, but the Japanese Ratchet has always had bushy black eyebrowes.

Also, if you can find the Japanese ToD trailer, it’s quite funny how the voice-over announces the title: “Ratchet and Clank FUUUUTUUUUUUUUURE”

  9. Lol, Space, its so fantastically huge… that if you ever lost your car keys in it then you would never find them…….

    HOLY…..eyebrows

  11. That made me laugh.

  12. Ratchet:Kazuya Mishima edition.

  13. What a big mistake. I think in earlier games they even made his eyes bigger and gave him this weird mouth and almost anime-like appearance. I feel sorry for anyone living in Japan who can only get these terrible versions. Ratchet is one of the best, most clever and iconic character designs Ive seen and these unnecessary changes ruin an engeniused design

  14. LOL

1.Ratchet looks creepy in japaanese versions gives me nightmares
    2.He has thick eyebrows.
    3.Looks to manga/anime
4.the Japanese ruin everything except for Mario

Now every video character has to be anime

1.Crash in the Japanese version he has Pac-Man eyes & same eyebrows in Crash Bandicoot the Wratch of Cortex. And the good part his teeth are clean.

2.Spyro looks more scarier than the Japanese crash Bandicoot has Pac-Man eyes. And his skin is pink

  15. Not only the design of the characters, but also the personality were changed….
They look like kids in the japanese version 🙁
Plus, the name of the galaxies are ruined in the japanese version:
Solana galaxy → Dodeka Ginga (very big galaxy), Girigiri Galaxy ,Zugaga Galaxy
Bogon Galaxy → Gagaga Ginga (Gagaga Galaxy)
Why do they have three names for the same galaxy?????
    What were they thinking????
Didn`t they perceive that most of the games are on the same Solana Galaxy??
