Crytek boss Cevat Yerli has expressed his belief that Sony will struggle against the likes of mobiles and tablets with its forthcoming PS Vita handheld.

Yerli praised the device when speaking in the latest issue of Develop magazine (via CVG), but believes it “might be too late.”

“The Vita is an absolutely fantastic platform but it will have a hard time, and it might be too late,” he said. “I love Sony as a company, and we have great relations with them, but the Vita is going to have a hard time against the next generation mobiles and all the tablets.”

He added: “There’s also the 3DS investing in this market. It’s going to be a battle, and it will be about content and the platform’s ability to receive the content. Streamlined social connectivity will also be very important.”

Sony yesterday announced that the Vita will be out before Christmas in Japan, but will miss the US and Europe altogether in 2011, and is instead set launch early next year as part of its planned phased release.

I don’t even want mobiles or tablets for gaming…because for one thing their controls and tech aren’t ideal for gaming, and for another thing most of their games lack length, depth, and replay value unless you’re bored out of your mind out somewhere and have a few minutes to play something that looks like it could be made with flash and played for free on the internet. I still think of the PSP and Vita as a portable console to play in the comfort of my room without a console or while I have some time when I’m away from home. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a different market and I don’t want to see the portable console market’s triple-A games die just for the app game market. I have little interest in wasting time playing variations of tower-defense games on an iPod Touch if I have the opportunity to get into a rich storylines, detailed design, and hardcore gameplay on a PSP or Vita.

  2. Crytek?…Oh wait yeah,I remember them from the boring Crysis.Lol these clowns don’t know shit about gaming 😀

  3. i beliewe that the handheld market qwerall will be cut down by 70 % or ewen by half
because the fab of smart phone games will soon die out
and because nintendo made no step forward with the 3ds

but i realy dont care about the part of the market that buys owerly simplified mini games
just give me my vita already!!!
