These User Levels Are Unneeded in LittleBigPlanet 2

LittleBigPlanet took the industry by storm with its release in 2008; unleashing an ocean of creation tools on players, the game was a major innovation in what was a fading genre. Many relished the idea and made some fantastic levels just days after release.

Of course, for every amazing Azure Palace there are 400 more that can be described as “meh” or downright crap (mostly crap). While the new tools available in next week’s LBP2 are exciting in the hands of master creators, they’re much less so in the hands of the mediocre.

So in the interest of maximizing the Create fun, keep in mind the following level types that wore out their welcome in the first game.

Trophy boosting levels

While it was great that the original LBP was one of the first high-profile exclusives to tout trophy support, there was a massive downside to that as well. Trophies that rewarded players for achieving great heights, high speeds, 20x score multipliers, and 1 million total points led to an onslaught of levels that aimed to help players grab them in one fell swoop. As if that weren’t enough, these also rewarded creators when players hearted these crap levels, leading the way to ill-earned creation trophies. Laziness everywhere was unjustly rewarded.

Luckily, the trophies in LBP2 only reward you for playing the game well and for spending loads of time in the create mode. While the awful booster levels created with LBP will be playable in the new game, they’re rendered moot by their sudden uselessness.

In the name of not wading through page after page of these atrocities when searching the game’s highest-rated user levels at launch, it’s a development I’m well in favor of.

Dicks, Swastikas, etc.

It’s an inevitability that just about every creation tool is faced with. While most people are excited to make the most of what they’re given, others rush to make dicks, swastikas, swastikas made of dicks, and vice versa.

The kid-friendly realm of LittleBigPlanet is no different, unfortunately, but thankfully those moderating the game’s community space have been very good about keeping this crap out of sight. The fact that these acts of social ineptitude were easily reported was a big reason for that, and there’s no reason to believe it will be any harder to do so in LBP2.

While I’m obviously not advocating hateful or otherwise inappropriate creation in LittleBigPlanet, is it really the best avenue for the point you’re trying to get across? I don’t imagine many PS3s in hell, so who are these people trying to reach out to?

Yet another Mario or Mega Man tribute

Look, we get it. Without landmark games such as the Super Mario Bros. or Mega Man series, we wouldn’t even be playing LittleBigPlanet today. We just don’t need another interpretation of World 1-1 or your favorite Mega Man 2 level.

It was cute the first few times, but if we wanted to play through these levels, we’d be playing through the appropriate game instead. After all, the 2D platformers of old were all about precise movement, while LBP’s floaty controls offer nothing of the sort.

I’m also going to pre-emptively ask you to reconsider making Pac-Man or 1942 levels in LBP2. Perhaps use those games as inspiration for an original use of the new tools at your disposal, or take those themes and throw them into a different genre. I just beg of you — enough with the tributes already.

Music levels

It’s hard to rag on these levels because the sheer amount of effort behind pulling them off is crazy. I can’t even imagine the amount of time it takes to “build” a song even as short as my favorite Star Fox track.

As a video game music junkie, I really do admire the effort and dedication put into such levels. However, I think those efforts are put to better use for levels that players can actually, you know, play.

In the end, this entry ends up being an extension of the one before it. I think we would all have more fun if more people chose to create something entirely new rather than duplicate something from a time long past.

All that’s left is for someone to recreate Mario Paint within LBP2 for some seriously meta shit:

Actually, that might not be the worst thing in the world.

  1. I wanna see more dicks in LittleBigPlanet 2.

  2. I agree with everything except the music levels. im in the beta and i think they can now be MUCH better than before thanks to new music tools

  3. “After all, the 2D platformers of old were all about precise movement, while LBP’s floaty controls offer nothing of the sort.”

    • How is he wrong? LittleBigPlanet has some of the floatiest, most imprecise platforming I’ve ever experienced.

  4. Holy crap you just want to boss the whole world around don’t you? I agree that the vulgar and crude things are not needed but beyond that you are being completely ridiculous. This game is all about letting people be themselves, don’t forget that.

    • I don’t see the problem with this article. He’s just saying that he’s sick of seeing Mario tributes, trophy boosting levels, etc.

  5. Ahh, great, a controlling opinionated article bitching about things that are going to happen anyway…
    Plea for views much?

I don’t get your Problem with the music levels, I have looked up countless levels like that just to see how well some can be made, and there are some exceptional ones that deserve credit..
