Hackers revive OtherOS feature for PS3

Hackers have reportedly brought back an enhanced version of the OtherOS system feature to the PlayStation 3.

According to PS3 hacker Graf Chokolo, OtherOS++ can “read or write anything” and is “very useful” for HV hacking. The feature also allows complete control over the PS3’s memory.

The hack bypasses the Sony’s firmware that originally removed the feature back in March 2010. It was one of the most controversial moves by Sony to ban OtherOS, with many companies like Fixstars Solutions supporting Yellow Dog Linux and shipping pre-installed PS3 units with their product.

It will be interesting to see how Sony responds to all the recent hacker movements on the PS3 lately, ranging from GeoHotz rootkey post to the PSN outage and recent revival of the OtherOS system. Stay tuned for more details.

  1. A main selling point for me was the Other OS feature even ordered a copy of Yellow Dog Linux so I might mod my old 60 Gig just to use it as a Computer that can help me with any format known to man sounds temping but I don’t hack nor to I pirate anything at all.

WTF, it says I’m logged in as “Admartian” and I’m Reneid Klein. In any case, I hope this crap stops. I don’t want Sony to have to respond to this as they should for PR and such, and then get attacked by Anon again. Or for Sony to do nothing about it for fear of being attacked and everyone runs rampant on the PS3 and turns it into another Dreamcast. Sony just can’t catch a break lately.

  3. Klein you bloody hacker

  4. I’m hoping that the last few attacks against Sony has made them realise that they should stop trying to stop the “hackers”. Go after the people that pirate the software not the people that are doing what’s legal according to American Laws.
