F1 2010 Designer: “Forza and GT single-player is bland”

Isn’t it exciting when a designer or producer comes out and attacks the competition because they know his title won’t sell at the same volume or produce probably the same quality? I think so. This seems to be the case for Lead Designer, Stephen Hood, of the F1 2010 franchise that is scheduled to release in September.

When discussing his feelings (via WSA) on Forza and Gran Turismo’s single-player gameplay, he can do nothing but refer to them as bland.

“I think I actually prefer Forza to GT, although both are quite bland single-player these days IMHO”

I’m not going to judge which I prefer over the other, but it doesn’t take a scientist to realize that the general core experience for these racing sims is the competition you find online. Whether you want to believe it or not, the offline experience against the AI is always going to offer a bland experience once you manage to slightly understand the way the game works. AI in racing sims can only do so much and understand so many scenario.

Outside of giving boosts to AI vehicles when behind, there isn’t much challenge to racing games in an offline world. How F1 2010 plans to change this is beyond me, but I can’t wait to see what they have in store for September that isn’t considered bland. It’s going to be next to impossible to allow the AI to think progressively like a human being on the race track, especially when it’s designed to the point of no contact like most simulation racers.

  1. I’ve played Forza 3 on my mate’s 360, and I prefer GT. But I’d take either game over an F1 title any day.

I haven’t bought an F1 game since the Geoff Crammond game on the Amiga, and I probably never will again. The sport is boring now, just a procession of cars in most races, and drivers with little or no personality. Any accurate simulation is also going to be boring.

  2. Its all speculation until all games are out on the table, but I think F1 2010 is going to deliver a pretty incredible experience as far as the career/single player experience is concerned. Focus on setups, weather, simulation choices, pit/tyre change strategy etc.. Its going to be wild.

I do agree with him that Forza 3 and GT single player experiences are bland. That’s not to say I don’t like both games – I do – but unless you’re a die hard sim fan, you probably wouldn’t bother playing through most of Forza and GT’s ‘career’ modes.

  4. Etiher they’re cocky hypocrites or they have something really nice up their sleeves. I’m hoping it’s the latter of the two.

  5. Wow, no credit link? I was DEFINITELY the first to post this since he was responding a question of mine (SynGamer) on twitter in that message.

All I ask for is some credit…thanks.
