No “Mary Poppins” umbrella for Alice in Madness Returns

When looking back at some of the earlier conceived weapons and items that players might have seen in the upcoming American McGee title Alice: Madness Returns, Spicy Horse executive producer R.J. Berg reveals that one item he originally wanted to implement was an umbrella, however, it was trashed due to “technical complexities” and an unfortunate similarities with Mary Poppins.

Speaking with BitMob, Berg describes that the umbrella would have served as a kind of “all-purpose, gliding-and-fighting” gadget. Although, not everything the developers draw out in concept makes its way into the game.

“In the early stages of development, many features that seemed like a good idea, turned out not to be,” said Berg. “I’ll confess that American and I initially wanted Alice to wield an umbrella, as a kind of all-purpose, gliding-and-fighting implement.”

“After concept work, the art and animation directors and the lead engineer offered their expert judgment: The technical complexities of implementing such an umbrella couldn’t be paid off in gameplay and were not worth the inevitable — and for Alice, unfortunate — association with Mary Poppins. The umbrella was discarded.”

Without the umbrella, Alice still seems to have quite the heavy arsenal of blood stained weaponry. Outside of the butcher knife, Alice totes a devilish Tea Pot, Hobby Horse, and Pepper Grinder. Alice: Madness Returns hits stores on June 14 for PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360. Stay tuned for more details.
