Pachter thinks PS4 “may not succeed”

Pachter is one of my favorite analysts to hear from because his predictions and assumptions are always way out there and good for a laugh. Today, Pachter is getting on the OnLive bandwagon and believes that it may be the reason that Microsoft’s and Sony’s next console “may not succeed.”

As you know, OnLive allows you to stream/download games over a network for a 3-day pass or to purchase it outright to play for an unlimited amount of time. While the service still really hasn’t taken off, the possibility for it to do so is always there.

Pachter believes OnLive has the possibility to make an impact but it needs certain aspects to achieve it.

“I’m not sure where OnLive will be by then.  If they can deliver a similar 3D/virtual reality experience (to Move and Kinect), we may not see new consoles succeed.”

Do you guys feel OnLive is a threat or no?

  1. No one from my generation of friends feels Onlive is where it’s at. We grew up with consoles and plan to always have one. I feel the Onlive demographic is that of the pc gamer. I think some younger console gamers may go for it…but I can’t see many older gamers like myself investing in it.

  2. Onlive? No thanks. Patcher is probably taking drugs from time to time (this time he must have taken alot). lol

  3. OnLive? No thanks.

As far as I can tell, many of the ‘big’ the games are the same price as buying a retail copy, but you only actually receive a license to play them that will last “at least until” some arbitrary date in the future.

So what happens after that? What happens when, for example, ten years down the line (assuming they’re still around then) OnLive decide they need to clear out some server space, and erase half your then-classic games collection?

No, thanks. Call me old-school if you like, but I will always, always choose to have a real console under my TV. I don’t want to have to rely on having an internet connection to play my games.

  4. ok lets just say its 2016
and bough the ps4 and xbox720 are 2 or 3 years in their lifecicle, because their next gen consoles they use multilaired bluray discs so the new games are now as big as 200gb and more
but theres a nother option, you can always download games on to youre hard disc drive…

its clear that futhure games will be biger than todays 50gb ps3 games
but if youre gona download those games onto youre personal computers hard disc drive, than there are 2 questions that fear to hear the answer,
    1. how big of a hard disc drive will i need?
    2. how long is a 200+ gig game gona download?

  5. OnLive is streaming. There are no downloads.

  6. Paranomia has a really good point. What about internet connections? What if you have a stormy day and the connection is buggy? What if your ISP is doing maintenance? What if you can’t afford the bill for this month and your net is off? What if you bump the modem in the middle of playing the games and lose your connection? It’s not like there will be a cache buffered that will allow you to keep playing. From what I remember when Onlive was first announced, you play the games on their PCs and the server sends an image of the game to your TV simultaneously. In other words, you aren’t playing the game on your TV, just getting a direct feed of a game you’re playing on a machine hundreds of miles away. So if the connection goes out for a second, I can’t imagine it just buffering and letting you pick up where you left off. Heck, if your connection goes out in the middle of streaming a Youtube video you have to refresh the page. I don’t recall being able to just have the video pick back up when the connection comes back without refreshing it.

If I’m wrong on any of this, someone please correct me.

  7. Streaming? That’s even worse. That means you have to keep taking up bandwidth to play something you could have played offline on a disc.

  8. Patcher Chutiya…..

ON Live is gonna b big shit in front of console thing…. How it’ll compete with PS3 and XBOX 360… There are lots of people who don’t have that much of speedy internet.. As it may b requirement for onlive….

Onlive will be a Epic Fail……. Thats for sure…. Thats why they are trying to create a room for that.. And sending these types of silly msgs….

Streaming for everything…. No way.. I mean BIG NO — for ON LIVE….

  9. oh patcher….

  10. I can’t remember where I read the story (I think ps3 Attitude) but a Sony big wig said it best when talking about the next generation of consoles.
He said most of the world does not have access to high speed internet so cloud gaming or streamed gaming really isn’t an option for most people because the infrastructure just isn’t there to support it in the world yet and probably won’t be for at least 10-15 years, Sony is dedicated to bringing gaming to the entire world as best it possibly can therefore physical media isn’t going anywhere.
That’s not exactly what he said but the basic gist of it.
Personally I hate digital download products due to the fact that I don’t have an actual physical anything of what I payed for (I pay $ for something I want to get something for it) and whoever is supplying the digital product has total control over my digital product, and it’s usually tied to an account that is subject to the supplier’s whim/eula. I love being able to look at my collection of games, and lend them to friends, and borrow others from friends etc.

  11. fuck onlive like its a cool idea to have and do that but i rather have a disc in my system ( ps3) then have to download it or stream it and what happens if u spend like $200 on a bunch of games and they get bankrupt or they lose all your info fuck that i like my system i like my ps3… onlive is shit blue ray is the future 50 is alot until they come up with sum next shit like z ray
