Sony’s PlayStation Network saw a 20% increase in revenue during the month of August in comparison to the previous month in July. This incline in revenue can be attributed to the overwhelming success of Scott Pilgrim Vs the World (which dominated), Castle Crashers, and Shank. Surprisingly, the PlayStation 3 version of Scott Pilgrim sold nearly four times as many downloads as that of XBL, which is incredibly impressive.
Rounding up the 4th and 5th spot in terms of sales last month was ZEN Pinball and Joe Danger. Overall, August was a particularly strong month for Sony and they look forward to continuing that trend in September.
“Playstation Network proved strong in August, especially for marquee title Scott Pilgrim,” said Benjamin Schlichter, Director of Research & Analysis at FADE. “This title was one of the few instances where a game based on a movie was better received than the movie itself.”
Top 5 PSN Titles for August 2010, by revenue:
* Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Ubisoft) – 117,000 units ($9.99)
* Castle Crashers (The Behemoth) – 27,000 ($14.99)
* Shank (The Behemoth) 23,000 ($14.99)
* ZEN Pinball (Zen Studios) 27,000 ($9.99)
* Joe Danger (Hello Games) 14,000 ($14.99)
Well it makes sense, seeing as the target audience for PS3 and this type of movie/game is the same. I’d say there are many more comic and retro game fans on PS3 than on 360. All my friends with 360’s also have PS3’s and they are all comic fans, retro gamers or both. The people I know with only a 360 are those that didn’t play games much growing up or that only play things like sports games or shooters. This doesn’t surprise me at all but it’s nice to see official stats.
