Street Fighter X Tekken “is competition of the century”

During this past weekend, Namco and Capcom announced the release of an upcoming fighting game that should set the precedent for the genre entirely with Street Fighter X Tekken. Not only will the two top fighting universes come together to find out who is the best of the best, but both developers are going to be developing the title independently in order to release two copies. Whether or not this is a ploy to get $120 from you or not is another story, but it goes without saying that to experience the whole package, you’ll truly need both as each is set in the developers respected universe.

Considering both titles will feature the same characters, but placed in either the SF or Tekken universe, you’d think that the development teams are collaborating on the game. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. According to Namco, this is a competition and it “isn’t a collaboration.”

Tekken creator, Katsuhiro Harada, knows that this is an unparalleled battle between two rivals that no gamer ever imagined would come to fruition.

“The Street Fighter and TEKKEN development teams have a great relationship. However, I see this new project not as a collaboration, but as the competition of the century between two legendary fighting game franchises,” Harada-san said. “The ultimate dream match-up is about to be realized. With this astonishing collaboration, a new chapter in fighting game history begins.”

If you think this is just a case of one company taking it too seriously, don’t be mistaken. Yoshinori Ono from Capcom has shared the exact same sentiments in regards to the game and is going to give it his all to produce a better title than Namco Bandai.

“This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games Inc., so I’m going to give it my all.”

Regardless of who you pledge your allegiance too, this is going to be quite the epic battle. Marvel Vs Capcom may have been the gem leading up to this point, but if developed properly, this could be the nuclear bomb of fighting titles.

Do you plan on picking up both versions or just one? If so, which?

  1. I use to love both game series, but their entry into this gen totally disappointed me and I have no desire to play them any more. I am thirsty for a fighter, but I think MK is going to quench that thirst.

IMO Capcom shits games out to fast lately –

  2. I’ll definitively get both. I love Street Fighter AND Tekken, and this seems like a fun little experiment.

Damn, it’s been a while since I have been excited about a game let alone a game announcement xD

  3. I want Capcom’s version, but I’m sure Namco’s version will be good, too. I’d much rather pick up MvC3.

  4. @TRF:

    . . . . . . . . . . Just pick the 3 games!!!!!!!! lol

  5. If the devs on both teams are taking this project as seriously as they say they are, then there’s no reason not to expect two excellent and wildly different games. Can’t wait.
