If you’re expecting Sony to be the first into the next generation of consoles, you better stop holding your breath now. If Sony’s Worldwide Studio boss, Shuhei Yoshida, is to be believed, you shouldn’t expect Sony to make the first move whatsoever.
In a recent interview with Develop, Yoshida makes mention that the PlayStation 3’s power allows for it to enjoy a longer lifespan than the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Due to this, Sony has no plans to hit the next generation as the console leading into it.
“Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move. Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move.
“Probably we should watch these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”
I’m not sure if this is a smart move by Sony or completely stupid. It goes without saying that the first company to the market will have an advantage with developers and the gamers who are too impatient to wait. Regardless of the smart business decisions Sony has made of late through marketing, advertising and price cuts, it seems like they’re going to fall back into the old rut when it comes to producing the next console as well.
I had a few bad experiences with my original Xbox, so when 360 arrived, I decided to wait for PS3 – a decision I still stand by to this day. I’d wait for PS4, too – especially given the disaster that was 360 reliability for a full 3 years after launch.
I’ve been thinking of getting a 360 for a while, but will wait and see how reliable the new system is before I seriously consider buying. After my string of problems with the original system, and the RROD issues with the 360, if the new model is anything other than perfect, I will never look at a Microsoft console again.
A few days ago they said that they learnt from there mistakes , releasing last was one of them. Didnt they learn anything from microsoft? That was how they are beating sony! Next they will probably tell us that the PS4 will be £999 and be extreamly hard to develop for.
@Doominator99
No, they really have learned from their mistakes, first of all: 1) The Price. The Ps3 was expensive because of the Blu-Ray Drive, but in three to four years the BD are going to be cheap so that is out of the question. 2) Hard to develop. They announced two days ago that they will create the hardware in a way that it will be easy to develop for, taking ideas from the developers.
@Pollo, where’s the link of the announcement?

…Idiots
I can see Nintendo going in first with an HD console.
my hopes are that no company will go and force itself to release a console too soon
when a new generation of a console brand releases it starts to push the older brand asise
and the goal of the leading companies in the gaming industry shouldent be about hawing a market adwantage ower each other, but to create new ways of experiencing this wonderful form of medium, all while maintaing a healthy “tree trunk” for the “branches” to grow
and as for pricing, a console is only expencive if its not inpart with the quality of the experience youre getting from the console
in other words: the lanch price of a ps3 is cheep if you consider how much youre getting for the price
and the price of a wii (sadly) is not
What Sony needs to do is release a state-of-the-art super expensive PS4 with tons of features and great games well before the competition releases their consoles so that impatient people can get the newest, top-of-the-line powerhouse console and even after the other companies release their consoles the PS4 will still be technologically superior and be lower in price by then. Cmon Sony, time to keep a secret well and start developing your next powerhouse project really early. It was hard for PS3 players early this gen to watch the PS3 getting put off and handed leftovers by everyone until behemoth games and good advertisements finally saved the console.
I would rather wait for a console to release and have a lot of features then just a console made for gaming. Because 1) I like spending money on stuff that I won’t use. 2) I’m a Sony junkie and 3) Sony has some awesome classic titles.
@ Doominator99: No, only the xbots see microsoft beating sony, but the truth is that sony is kicking microsoft in balls. Only the smart see the truth.
And releasing first a year early was one of the stupidest things they could’ve done. If they would have waited the 360 could’ve been what it is now and not that piece of shit that broke every time you touched it. They released it early so it would be the only next gen console and build up jack*** fanboys like a bunch of p***ys and avoid the competition because they KNEW that they would lose and not get any sales, because the ps3 is superior in every way. And the sader thing is that the new model still sucks…….
