SEGA knows it has to deliver at a higher quality

Tired of Sonic not living up to your standards? A lot of people are. SEGA has literally taken one of gaming’s most historic franchises and reduced it to mere shoverlware in a world that has enough shovelware as it is. Fortunately, the developer/publisher realizes this and has stated that they need to do a better job delivering quality on an overall level.

While we can say that SEGA has delivered quality titles like Valkyria Chronicles and Resonance of Fate, it’s easy to see where the company has faltered as well.

Speaking with CVG, Mike Hayes has stated “It’s important that on our old IP that is respected, we need to deliver a good product. And in some instances we have done that – look back at when we re-did Sega Rally. It scored well and was moderately successful commercially. But then with other great franchises like Golden Axe we didn’t produce a great game at all.

“Going forward, if we’re going to look at any existing IP to bring out the locker, we have to make sure we get the quality to a level we now expect. I’m not saying which IP it would be – a Streets Of Rage, a Crazy Taxi, whatever. What we have to do now is build something that is 85 per cent plus [rated]. We can’t just get away with PR.”

Hopefully this proves to be accurate because I miss the days of popping Sonic’s cartridge into a console and knowing that it was going to be an entertaining experience. So, kudos to SEGA for realizing it’s an issue and I look forward to seeing them correct it.

  1. omg …. did he just say Streets of Rage ?

I have a feeling he’ll live to regret that. I would love a new streets of rage though

  2. Sega has been doing pretty nice these last years. Their quality has risen quite a little bit.

  3. I’m not sure anyone really needs a new Crazy Taxi, but he’s right- there’s no point in reviving an old franchise if you think you’re going to sell it based on brand recognition alone. Nice to see that they’re finally seeing that gamers are smarter than that.

  4. If SEGA can do an old series right, I’d buy any Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, whatever.

SEGA is fail in my eyes… They butchered one of the best fanchises ever, changing it to 3D and cheesy voice actors are one of the small problems that plagued the newer Sonic game. They failed on Bayonetta, not making it on par with the 360 version. Chances are I’m not going to purchase a lot of their products due to the lack of quality that they have presented in the last few years.

  6. I preordered Resonance of Fate, and should be getting it tomorrow. Sega was all about quality back on Genesis, and Dreamcast, but now they are pumping out mediocore games one after another.

  7. uhhh duh they do, sega has been on a losing streak for ages now

  8. I would rather they focus on new ips now as sonic is getting dull. Quality shouldnt be sumit they have to say, should be something they do automatically.
