Best Soundtrack

Winner: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim / Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (tie)

We’ve said it probably a thousand times at this point — there isn’t enough attention paid to game music. This year’s slate of soundtracks was impressive, and voters were equally impressed by Skyrim and Uncharted 3 (although no one stepped up to explain why they voted for Drake’s latest globetrotting adventure).

“Skyrim. Jeremy Soule is nothing short of amazing.” — trf

“Skyrim. The music playing every time I start fighting a dragon always pumps me up.” — hero

“Skyrim. Dragonborn is such an amazing song.” — SnowHawk

“L.A. Noire, hands down. The music on the radio was amazing and the Jack Benny radio shows were the icing on the cake. Then the final song playing as the credits rolled was the perfect end to the game. I put it up there with Shenmue, Grandia II and JGR as one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time.” — Reneid Klein

“Sonic Generations. Absolutely brilliant.” — Deadpool

“[…] if there were game soundtracks this year that immersed me into the game more than any other, than it was the amazing music in InFamous 2” — Reigen

“I ended up picking Portal 2. I’ve got one of the songs as my ringtone, and “Exile Vilify” is just beautiful.” — WonsAuto

Best Downloadable Game

Winner: Other

There were a few standout games released on PSN and XBLA this year, but overall the class of great downloadable releases this year was a bit thin. As a result, no game in our poll received more than one vote, and each “Other” vote belonged to a different game.

“I chose Stacking because it’s very original and a great game.” — SnowHawk

“From Dust easily.” — Deadpool

“I guess I really should have checked to make sure it came out this year but I picked Contra Hard Corps Uprising by a mile” [ed. note: Yep! You’re good.] — +silent55

“Daytona [USA] was my pick.” — Smurfn

“Infamous 2- festival of blood.” — unicron7

“Well, technically I’ve only played Stacking out of all of those games, but I did play Limbo on XBLA and I imagine the PSN version isn’t much different, so I picked Limbo.” — trf

Best Sports Game

Winner: NBA 2K12

Some gamers like to write off sports games as frat-bro fodder, but they do so at the expense of excluding themselves from some well-constructed experiences. This category was a three-way tie last year, but NBA 2K12 manages to break away from the pack to claim the award all for itself.

“NBA 2K12 and MLB 11: The Show are the only two I’ve played this year. MJ wins.” — WonsAuto

“MLB 11: The Show is an awesome game. must buy for Baseball fans.” — SnowHawk

“Slightly biased, but Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters (it’s the only sport game I played).┬áNonetheless, it’s the best the series has ever been.” — Deadpool

“Fight Night is always excellent.” — trf

Best Racing Game

Winner: MotorStorm: Apocalypse

There was plenty for motorsports fans to get excited about this year, from the Xbox-360 exclusive Forza Motorsport 4 to the rock-solid Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS. Still, it was Sony’s MotorStorm: Apocalypse that got the most votes.

“I haven’t played many [racing games], but I did enjoy what I played of MotorStorm.” — trf

“Other: Driver San Francisco. Great fun.” — Deadpool

“I enjoyed Motorstorm: Apocalypse” — Smurfn

“I’ve played a dickton of Mario Kart 7, and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.” — WonsAuto

  1. Fair bit of division this year. I definitely swayed from the ‘norm’ this year too, I played some hidden gems and some really shamefully overlooked titles. It’s a pity the last quarter was so packed with great games.
