Are you one of those gamers who loves buying DLC because the development team couldn’t fit it onto the disc? No? We didn’t think so; considering you’d have to be insane to want to have to pay for content that was originally planned for the retail release in the first place. However, PlayStation 3 owners can now thank Microsoft for its poor hardware decision making for yet another batch of future DLC from Capcom.
According to Jun Takeuchi, producer of Lost Planet 2, the development team was forced to cut out a ton of extra content from the game because they didn’t want it to become a swapfest for Xbox 360 owners due to the dwindling disc size provided. So, what does that result in for the rest of the industry? It means we’ll have to purchase that content as DLC later on down the road.
Of course, some will say, “Why doesn’t Capcom just release it for free?” Well, that’s because both Microsoft and Sony charge fees for downloaded content. Why should the developer and/or publisher have to pay money to offer gamers content they originally wanted to because of Microsoft’s DVD9 decision making? They shouldn’t. However, Capcom has not confirmed yet whether or not this content will be free or not either.
Here is the quote from the latest issue of Famitsu:
Did the development go well?
There weren’t any big problems. More troubling than any development problems was having to keep cutting out content.
We included a lot in this release, and by the end it became a battle with the disc capacity.
Truly, we were weeping as we were forced to cut stuff.
That stuff might be available as DLC in the future – look forward to it.
Despite Capcom being the first company to really come out and publicly acknowledge that the choices by Microsoft have limited the developed of its titles, I’d be willing to bet that many developers have had to do this exact same thing in the past. Just imagine how much better this generation would have been than it already has if Microsoft had just chosen an HD format for its medium.
Oh, the possibilities.
There is a choice – multiple discs.
Why can’t they just put all the content on the PS3 version if it is already made and force people to buy it on the 360 side. That is the price you have to pay for owning a 360.
shame, oh well
@ Prof. Paddy
Highly unlikely for a game like LP2. This is a way to make money, so DLC would be the way I’m seeing it.
Using multiple discs COSTS MORE money. That’s not exactly a choice.
It’s a choice, but not necessarily a good one.
Why didn’t they just make it exclusive if bluray’s offers more space?
Because Capcom’s relationship with Microsoft is very strong. Lost Planet was originally an Xbox 360 game…and so Lost Planet 2 will have to be the same if not better than the PS3 version on the Xbox 360.
i always new some of the content in the gta 4 dlc was cutt out of the original game
Just sounds like an excuse to charge for DLC.
@SonyJunkie I feel the exact same way dude.
But we all know why they don’t do that. The developers want more money.
Too bad, I’m happy playing my ps3 with only one disc, and the freedom of not having DLC for a game that is supposed to be full.
Another good example is the 360 version of Team Fortress 2 compared to the PC version.
The PC version gets all these awesome updates for free….while the 360, when they do get it, have to pay for them.
I agree with @SonyJunkie, even though I don’t have PS3. The Blu-ray has plenty of capacity so Capcom should include it for PS3 people. They should make Marcus and Dom DLC, and save room for the real game on the disc.
The main problem is that MS reserves 1.7GB per disc for DRM and dashboard updates, so games are limited to 6.8GB maximum (per disc). Lot of good that did, since 360 has been cracked for years…
Gamers should demand reduction/removal of the majority of the DRM and dashboard updates from game discs. It’s what MS needs if they are going to stay close to Sony in this extended console generation.
This ‘article’ is just biased fanboy tripe.
What a ridiculous load of bullcrap this story is. No gamer should be believe for one second that the developers and manufacturers don’t love the free money that DLC brings. Now they are claiming that the limitation of the xbox DVD is leaving them no choice. Cry me a farking river, this posses me off and it should piss all of you off too. Their expectation is for the community to overlook their greediness and pit the PS3 owner against the 360 owner to argue about who’s fault it is. In reality the could spend the extra 2 cents the extra discs might cost and deliver the content, but wh would they when they can make milions off the DLC, think about it. Don’t believe the bullshit!!
“Truly, we were weeping as we were forced to cut stuff.”
Reading that comment made me throw up in my mouth a little. Don’t believe it for one second, this is without a doubt a financial business decision first and foremost. The fact that they are spinning this propaganda garbage is sickening.
Yeah this is one thing that does suck about multiplatform and being limited to the DVD9 disc.
Limited space means we have limited content or even less content then a disc format w/ bigger storage.
Even though that devs could fully utilize the Blu-ray disc on PS3 games devs won’t utilize it because they want all ports to be equal and they would rather charge that extra content as DLC instead.
I’m so upset to see that so much content was taken out of FFXIII.
15GB = WTF? That’s like half the game right there.
Unless your able to read Japanese and get the PS3 import version of FFXIII you’ll never be able to see that extra content.
If Microsoft would just be smart and let 3rd party people be able to put in bigger hard drives in the Xbox 360 and just run the game off of the hard drive much like the PC then we wouldn’t be having these issues of storage space on the Xbox 360.
Ofcourse in the end it’ll be down to hardware power which PS3 is more powerful then Xbox 360 but at least we’ll be able to have that content day 1 instead of having that content being taken out and paid for as DLC.
Lost Planet 2 sales….Down..
I hate it when you pay for a small part and later you get the rest…WTF!??!All or nothing I always say.
I rarely get DLC unless it’s cheap or free.. I refuse to pay for something that should’ve been in the game already..
ya i hardly ever buy it either, unless its an extremely good game (valkyria chronicles)
This is what happens when you cater to the lowest common dominator.
@ kopkiwi
ya and it sucks
Yes it does. There were those of us picking this would be the case way back in 07 but others said “No no, Blu-ray wont make a difference this gen” Well gee, look how that turned out.
i know. but why couldnt they just put it on multiple discs?
/facepalm
wow…how epping greedy
meh, anyways I kind of like it like how it was back in the days….the company had to make SURE the game was working fine before releasing it AND it had everything already in the disc
now companies all over the place are saving some extras as DLC…BS!! (reminisces about Capcom’s stupid ass $4 per alt costume)
*sigh*
@ Dr. Moogle
actually it was 4 dollars for 4 alt. costumes but your point remains valid non the less.
I’ve got mixed feelings about Microsoft this generation – if Microsoft hadn’t existed they wouldn’t have pushed Sony to make PSN and maybe even put the features that they did on the PS3. On the other hand, if Microsoft hadn’t existed in this generation, games would be a whole lot longer I would guess. As someone said, what if GTA4 was a PS3 exclusive? That game world was huge, and just imagine what they could’ve done with all the extra space the blu-ray gives.
@spoonpower
just cuz they have the space doesnt mean they would use it.
It was pretty obvious DVD9 wasn’t enough with the extremely short MW2 campaign >.>
@blackou7
lol i dont think thats the reason for the sort campaign lol
@blackou7: lol, well IW are MS fanboys
but yeah, its odd that they wont just use 2 discs….oh yeah…for money…
thats why we have blu rays
@carzam: i dont know…im pretty sure they stayed with DVDs for a reason…..
but yes, blu rays are in fact nice
Fuck!
I always knew microsoft was making multiplatform games suffer and im not going to pay for cut content which should be in the game.
Microsoft bad decision to use DVD9 has caused games contents to be limited. The Lost Planet 2 game will not have all the content ithat was originally planned for, so gamers will be missing on part of the gaming experience unless they get the DLC.
