Crysis 2 to be a “Halo killer”

It takes a brave development team to step forward and claim that the project they’re working on was created to be a Halo killer of sorts. However, EA’s Frank Gibeau has said just that in a recent interview with IndustryGamer. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard these sorts of claims and to be honest, they usually fall short.

“We were trying to craft a Halo-killer, you know a product that would squarely go after what Bungie built with our partners at Crytek,” he told IndustryGamers. “So the Crysis 2 product is spectacular, very high-end, and is going to be a multi-year franchise.”

If we’re looking at this realistically, it’s hard to imagine a title outside of Gran Turismo being able to topple what Bungie has achieved with Halo in terms of sales. Microsoft owners are willing to buy Halo titles in the millions regardless of if the game is mediocre or fantastic and that’s not going to be the same for Crysis 2.

We’ll see how this ends up in time, but I’m very doubtful it ends up being anywhere close to as successful as the Halo franchise.

No matter how bad halo is it will still sell millions. even if crysis 2 is 10X better than halo, the halo fans will still deny that it is a halo killer.

  2. LoL really, gt5 have a chance to beat halo in sales? Cod maybe, but no way will gt do such.

As for this if only I have a dime for every time I heard “this will be a halo killer” and it not being so.

  3. The Activision/Bungie deal is a halo killer.

  4. I hope you’re joking One-Shot. Gran Turismo’s full releases (1-4) sold an average of 10+ million copies per title…Halo has never sold 10 million copies of ANY iteration.

GT5:P sold 5 Million copies and the PS3’s install base was only 35-40% of what it is now.

Halo 3 sold 8 Million copies with a much larger install base at the time.

Gran Turismo 5 has the potential to sell 10+ Million copies…easily.

    Come back to reality.

PS: MW2 outsold Halo on the 360 already by 1 million copies.

HAZE was called a Halo killer and look how that turned out.

One question though – does the term “Halo Killer” refer to sales, or the quality of the title. HAZE failed on both counts. I believe Crysis is said to be a Halo killer in that it’s going to be “spectacular, very high-end, and is going to be a multi-year franchise.”

  6. EA has the worst PR.

    Just stop talking.

  7. I’m a little sick of everyone getting so cocky over Crysis 2. Crytek, now EA? Crysis is all graphics, it won’t even come close to touching Halo.

  8. halo killer…?
either there targeting low or dont see that games like batlefield, killzone, cod, resistance,… hawe already surpased the multplayer and singleplayer qualitys of halo

  9. PS: i dont believe that crysis2 is going to be a halo killer of any sort,
in fact, i dont ewen beliewe its going to be any good at all besides staring at

  10. Someone needs to tell the EA Marketing department to stop making claims they can’t back up. This reminds me of when the EA/DICE rep said “Battlefield: BC2 is at Uncharted 2’s level of quality”… Ha! At least there wasn’t so much fucking dust to hide destructo-physics in the Uncharted series.

Naw Halo-Killer or not, this game is going to be pretty god damn awesome.

  12. “halo killer…?

    LOL.

depends on what they mean by “halo killer”. Halo is pretty meh, but its fanbase is huge. I doubt anyone could surpass it there. Just like battlefield, sure its better than mw2, but it’ll never sell more than it.

Halo 3 has almost sold 11 million copies.

    @TRF
from what I’ve seen, crysis has some great gameplay as well as customization. Although the multiplayer left something to be desired, they should be able to fix it for this game. Another cool feature was the ability to make your own maps. Hopefully that is included in the console version as well.

dice and ea never made those claims, the community did. It’s obviously not true so dice responded saying that they don’t believe they have better graphics but they challenge uncharted to a fight over vistas (jokingly).

Halo Reach will destroy Crysis 2 in pieces

  17. I with patrick on this one. what does “Halo Killer” means? Is it a sales killer or overall game quality or the whole “Hype machine series”
