Jaffe discusses the visual style of Twisted Metal

Last week at E3 one of the biggest announcements was that Eat Sleep Play is currently working on the next title in the Twisted Metal franchise. Though Jaffe tried to keep this secret under wraps for the past 18 months, many expected the unveiling to take place at E3 and it did. However, Jaffe has seen a lot of criticism towards the visual representation of the game and has gone on record to defend and clarify what you can expect from the title.

To do this, Jaffe took to twitter (as usual).

1) We deliver an anti-aliased, 720p, HDR experience. We support 1080p
output (with noticeable improvement to UI elements). We’re not “sub HD”
by any stretch of the imagination.
2) We’re still pre-alpha which means we aren’t even done writing
graphics code let alone tuning the art content to go with it.
3) Many textures and shaders are pre-alpha quality and will be improved.
4) Most screenshots and video on the web were taken from video cameras
rather than direct screen capture. They don’t represent even our
current quality level.
5) We don’t want to drop our frame rate even though we have a megaton of
action on the screen with dynamic physics and lighting (and eventually
four player splitscreen!)
6) Our levels are large with very long draw distances. Everything you
see is an interactive world, not simply static geometry. A lot of it is
destructible.
and finally,
7) We haven’t even shown our best stuff yet. If anything, we’ve only
shown our oldest stuff, and our artists keeping discovering new ways to
improve visual quality.

During the E3 reveal, it was clear that the game wasn’t close to a finished state as of yet. The visuals were lacking and a lot of us watching from home questioned whether or not this game could appeal to this generation of gamer. Despite those concerns, Twisted Metal should shape up to be a visually appealing title that will give gamers a new arena to create as much havoc in as possible.

  1. People bit*h too much. Twisted Metal looks awesome and looks fun.

  2. I’m really looking forward to see more of the destructible enviroments and I hope that it actually changes the way you play the game.

Hearing that the game will support splitscreen is quite nice too. You know, the thing that excites me the most is that the gameplay we’ve seen resembles Warhawk a lot (which is to be expected), with a great focus on team play.

  3. I really hate people. They want everything to look like Uncharted 2 and a game like this, there is no need and it just takes up more resources when you will barely see anything when you are driving at 150+mph. I think it looks fine, all I care about is the gameplay, runs smooth, looks clean and doesn’t look terrible and this seems to be pushing in that direction.

  4. @SonyJunkie: “I really hate people”, lol xD

  5. Why do people bitch about pre-alpha footage, dumb shits. TM is gonna look good and more importantly it’s going to be hella fun and that in the end is definitely Jaffe’s main objective while developing the title. It’s more about fun gameplay, destruction and mayhem than graphics.

  6. i apreciate good graphics in a game, but at the end they realy dont mean sh*t
tvisted metal looks really, really fun, what else do you need?

people usually bitch about graphics of unfinished games beacuse they worry that it wont get better if nobody complains

  8. I’ve never really cared about twisted metal….anyways, People some Final Fantasy Versus 13 gameplay screenshots are out 😛 Check em out at this site http://www.the-magicbox.com/1006/game100623a.shtml

  9. The art style looks awesome. I can’t wait to see the game when it’s finished.

  10. Even the pre-alpha looks as good as most games earlier this gen. And it looks like more crazy fun than any other title this gen, sorry Saints Row and Mario.
