A lot of people like to point and laugh at Sony’s leap into a social networking world with PlayStation Home, but many fail to realize exactly how successful the platform is from a business standpoint. Not only has the application created millions of dollars in revenue through micro-transactions, but it has received a ton of support from developers and publishers around the industry.
In a recent interview with Gamasutra, Sony’s Home director Jack Buser, has revealed exactly how successful Home has truly been for the PlayStation brand.
“With numbers like we have, it goes without saying that Home has been a huge success for our company, something that we have been very proud of,” said Buser. “We’ve released over 5,000 virtual items on the platform, and we know that once those items reach maturity, they are profitable. So you see us creating a tremendous amount of virtual items, because it is such a high margin business for us to be in.”
With those types of numbers, it’s not surprising to hear that Sony feels that Home has been a success. After all, Home received more E3 attendees than the actual event itself. While that’s not too difficult to imagine, it’s still a solid benchmark for activity.
Have you checked out Home recently?
In terms of revenue for Sony it might be a success but for us gamers its a complete failure.
Home is like a pedaphiles dream come true, doesn’t offer much on the fun side, unless stalking is your cup of tea.
I want to, but every time I go into it, it asks for an update..
And when I click “Yes”, my Ps3 just crashes..
>_<
If Sony makes Home fun, then maybe I’ll play. But right now your only options are to dance like an idiot and talk to random people.
Every time I get on home there is always a ton of people on. People who say home fails usually are the type of people who like to push their opinions on others. Regardless of what any of these fools say, there is still a shit load of people who actually like home, making their opinions null and void.
Home isn’t to “their” liking. That makes it a fail lol.
@SerebiiDotNet
Once it asks for a patch update, don’t accept quite yet. Wait until your HDD activity light stops blinking and then accept the patch update. I had the same issue but once I did that, it worked perfectly.
As for the article, I totally understand how Home has been a success. It’s insane how many people buy these items… not unexpected really, but some of them are truly expensive. They release a costume not too long ago that cost 15$… and people bought it because of how “exclusive” it would be. It probably costs next to nothing to create and the profit for them is sky high. No wonder we see so many virtual items released week after week.
I have been in Home recently too and I’m just as disappointed in the service as I was back when I left it many months ago. It’s slow (although faster than it used to be), it’s clunky, not well organized, just feels like a mess in many areas. There’s so much they could do to improve it but considering the revenue they already get from barely fixing any issues, I doubt it’s a priority of theirs right now.
Deleted Home awhile ago…3gb is alot of space on my ol 60gb 😉
for us gamers home is a complete epic fail.
I’m a gamer, and I personally don’t mind home. No sense in complaining about a service that is FREE. Just don’t play it. Its really that simple.
