Is the Japanese games industry dying?

Ninja Gaiden and Devil’s Third creator Tomonobu Itagaki has been known to be a little over the edge and somewhat bat shit crazy, but could you imagine if this man ran for any political office? It would spell the doom of any country willing to hand over an ounce of power. Thankfully, Itagaki is only interested in running for office in Japan and the rest of the world can make due with his ridiculous comments about the gaming industry from his home country.

Speaking with EDGE Online, Itagaki was questioned about the growing concern in regards to the gaming industry dying within Japan. While he did indeed agree with these concerns, his answer to the question can only be met with a puzzled face and a tint of uncertainty.

“Japan failed to import capitalism, or rather, it failed to understand the lessons of capitalism, of the free market economy. What I’m talking about isn’t just limited to the games industry. I’m talking about what has happened in Japan since the ’60s.”

“Japan’s destiny – the destiny of this era – was already determined then. Didn’t I say I was one of the top three most knowledgeable in the industry?”

I’m just not sure what to make of all this. Perhaps if the Japanese were more greedy, the gaming industry would be more successful? After all, it’s not like the country is responsible for delivering the rest of the world Nintendo and PlayStation.

  1. It’s far from dying. The industry is the same, only thing is the world has evolved outside of it. Besides, DS and Wii being so popular overseas means many developers probably think it’s a better business to develop for those platforms.

  2. If the people in the thumbnail are the ones developing the games, then it wouldn’t surprise me if the Japanese games industry is dying.

Still, I hope it doesn’t. I like Japanese games from time to time.

  3. Maybe he should stop encouraging game development on the American-based Xbox. Durr stupid fanboy he is

  4. well you hawe to look at it this way, japanese kids grow up with manga and anime witch are comics and animations only presented in a cute and mischefted way, they call it cute, while we call it childish
also the japanese electonic market is dominated by female consumers, so most games there aren`t targeted for men anyway
and with squaresoft, the icoteam, capcom, nintendo, and sega releasing games like FinalFantasy, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Super Mario Galaxy, Jakuza, the Ico games and other games that hit the japanese market months before the rest of the world, i realy couldent understand how someone could view the japanese gaming industy as dead
