Gran Turismo 5: Beautiful Destruction

Throughout the course of the Gran Turismo series, vehicles have been able to endure endless hits without showing a scratch. In Gran Turismo 5, however, developers have made a game that looks so realistic, even more so with damage actually playing a role in the gameplay. It is without a doubt that Gran Turismo 5 will be one of the most realistic driving games to date.

Gran Turismo 5s new damage system is demonstrated in real time.

No longer are cars unrealistically immune to damage in Gran Turismo 5.

In a gaming generation where realism is key, it’s pleasing to see developers finally improving some of the clearly unrealistic aspects of their games.  Hopefully other developers will learn from this as well, allowing for a truly more realistic gaming experience in the driving genre.

  1. I’ll admit that it’s about time it was added, but I also have to say that it’s not something that ever really bothered me. For me, the series has always been about the driving experience, not what happens to the car when you get it wrong.

However, this will hopefully prevent the kind of bumper-car lunacy that plagues GT5 Prologue online. Plus, with – hopefully – private friends-only rooms, we can all race with friends and ‘proper’ players, and exclude the morons who like to screw it up for everyone else.

My only remaining unanswered question is whether the single-player opponent AI has been significantly improved; damage aside, that’s the one area where previous GT games have been sorely lacking. Surely they can’t have made all these improvements and neglected the AI… can they?

  2. When it comes to driving games, AI is essential. Granted how long this game has been in development, I can’t lead myself to believe that they haven’t focused on AI to some extent.

Also, to me the new damage aspect of the game is important primarily because of Gran Turismo’s reputation. I’ve heard endless times about how realistic the series is, despite the fact that (in terms of damage) it is very unrealistic. Hopefully we’ll get some word on the AI in the near future.

  3. Yay finally the damage system is there 😀 Always wanted this feature due to the main fact that it adds more realism to the game especially since it’s “THE real driving simulator”. This game is definitely going to be a day-one buy for me. I could almost say the Gran Turismo 5 is several games packed in one since they have all these different type of racing modes. Hopefully gamers will see as much value in this game as I do 🙂 and make this game uber-successful

The AI has improved dramatically. If you want to know everything about GT5, just visit gtplanet. The guys over there put everything under a microscope.

  5. well you hawe look at it this way, only the 7th generation consoles(exept the wii) are able to produce such deformation, but gt5 p is a small demo made for the fans that couldent wait for gt5
some of you might disagre on the demo thing with me and say if its a demo than why include so much and not include deformation for the price, well like i said its a demo and while gt5 was unsure if released on multiple bd discs or not, gt5 p takes about 2 gb, dont beliewe me, check the digital wersion on the ps store
