It’s been a long time since Sony and Polyphony Digital announced Gran Turismo 5 for the PlayStation 3. In fact, it was almost insulting to gamers to see the once though of vaporware, Gran Turismo PSP title, hit retail shelves first. Now, however, we’re five years down the road and Sony is preparing to release Gran Turismo 5 into the wild and things couldn’t look better.
As a gamer first, it’s easy to note that Gran Turismo 5 looks incredible and that the physics and procedural damage that PD has implemented into the title is something to behold. However, as a critic, it’s also easy to blast the studio for taking so long to release a title with so much anticipation behind it. Fortunately, Sony’s Worldwide Studios Europe VP Michael Denny doesn’t feel as though the wait will hamper the title.
“I think it is the game that the driving genre absolutely needs. Far from looking dated, it will look state of the art. It’s going to be bigger and better than ever. We need exclusive games that differentiates our platform, Gran Turismo has always been our flagship title and I am sure it is going to be that again.”
It’s good see Sony so enthusiastic about the game, but the bottom line is, the only thing that will matter in terms of justification and the measurement of Gran Turismo 5’s success is the sales column. If Gran Turismo 5 can’t manage to move over five million units almost instantly, it’ll be very difficult to call it a commercial success given the long development cycle the game has had.
Do you think five million is a fair assessment and realistic goal or do you think a much lower number would represent success for the release of gT5?
I saw a line-up to play Gran Turismo 5 demo at the Best Buy close by. It was crazy XD
I think you’d have to absolutely hate the racing genre in its entirety not to want to play GT5.
Having said that, this generation seems a little strange as far as PS3 games go. There are a number of exclusive titles that are outstanding, but have not sold anywhere near as many copies as you’d expect; every review and everyone you talk to seems full of praise for them, and yet it seems very few are actually buying them.
Hopefully GT5 will break that trend. I’d like to think it will not only shift millions of copies, but millions of consoles as well.
I really want to buy this game.
Reason #1… Its awesome.
Reason #2… I really feel like I need to support this game.
But it comes out the same month that Little Big Planet 2 comes out =(
and LBP2 is a MUST buy for me
I have always HATED racing simulators..
Although I really want to get this game, just to stare at it..
It looks so beautiful..
xD
of corse, but i dont see why this should mater
the real success will be seen 3 years after when the game is still going to hawe 200 000 daily online players(in my opinion)
I will need to save up some money so I can buy this game, Little Big Planet and possibly also Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom in November. It’s crazy.
Almost every Gran turismo has sold over 10 million copies. Granted, the systems they played on had a larger install base. So I would say 6 million is fair as long as Sony markets this game to everyone because its not God of War, everyone including my grandpa can play or just enjoy the beauty of this game. Sony has to market it as their flagship title.
it possible as chrismas is soon after the games release which will boost the sales obviously
They only need to sell 4,999,999 now because mine will be in my hot little hands on DAY 1!!!!
I’m a believer…
PS3 games just dont sell as much as other systems for some unknown reason and i hate it when our exclusives dont get good sales!!!!!! AAAARRRGG!!!! If GT5 sells over 5 million they need the FBI or something to do a full scale investigation to find out where the sales came from! lol
