FIFA ’11 hits 2.5+ million sold in first week; Ultimate Team incoming

Electronic Arts has revealed that FIFA ’11 has reached 2.6 million units sold in just its first week on retail shelves. This is a tremendous feat for the title as it is an increase of 29% over last year. Furthermore, considering the title released in the UK last Friday, this means that almost one million of those titles were sold within two-to-three days as the UK reported sales around 850K.

Adding onto the already impressive figures, EA confirmed that FIFA ’11 received over 11 million online players during October 1st and 2nd — which happens to be the highest amount of any EA title, ever.

However, one mode of play was missing from FIFA ’11’s launch and that was Ultimate Team. Considering this game mode released on the disc for both NHL ’11 and Madden ’11, it’s odd to hear that FIFA ’11’s Ultime Team won’t be added into the mix until November. Fortunately for gamers, this mode will be free this year and should add a ton of replay value to the game.

“We’re thrilled at how fans embraced FIFA 11 last weekend, and we are excited to be able to offer one of our most popular game modes – FIFA 11 Ultimate Team – for free this November,” said EA Sports boss Peter Moore.

“This is a landmark achievement for EA SPORTS – we’ve shattered sales records at retail, critics are praising FIFA 11 as being one of the most authentic and innovative titles ever, and fans are connecting and competing with other gamers around the world and have logged a record number of online connected game sessions.”

This is obviously a great achievement for the team at EA, so we’d like to congratulate them on their recent success with its sports franchises despite the disappointment that is NBA Elite ’11.
