Sony: First-party studios hitting PS3’s full potential

Michael Denny, Sony’s VP of Worldwide Studios Europe, has recently acknowledged that first-party developers and exclusive developers of the PlayStation 3 have finally started to reach the console’s true potential. Denny spoke with the Official PlayStation Magazine in an interview and had nothing but great things to say about upcoming third-party titles, but had no issue confirming that it is the first-party developers that are truly taking advantage of the PlayStation 3.

“A big philosophy behind forming Worldwide Studios is that we can have a network of key first-party developers who are able to share ideas, best practice, thoughts – creatively and otherwise.” said Denny. “I think the success of these studios [Naughty Dog/Sucker Punch] is that a lot of them retain their independent views and creativity but lean on each other for support.”

“What’s exciting is that we’re five years into PS3 and developers are really starting to push PlayStation to its full potential… Then you layer on top of that Move launching, then you layer onto that the potential of 3D,” said Denny.

“It’s exciting times to be involved in PlayStation” he added.

It’s hard to disagree with the man when you see how titles like Gran Turismo 5 and LittleBigPlanet 2 are shaping up. It’s even more obvious when you look at past exclusive releases like Uncharted 2 as well. There are definitely great things in store for PlayStation 3 owners in the near future, but more interestingly, it will be amazing to see what is developed come 2-3 years down the road.

  1. Having an Uncharted 3 in 3D with optional Move support would be sweet. Or maybe see a collaboration between these studios. Seeing Cole in an Uncharted game, for instance, or vice versa.

cole is in Uncharted 2 multiplayer Reneid.

  3. I know that, but I’m referring to the campaign.

  4. Has anyone run photoshop on a PS3? if so what additional software is needed,I am about to buy a PS3,I like the speed,RAM and graphics chip set,I know UNIX is possible, but photoshop??? I am doing graphic design and now starting with 3D layering, the PS3 seems like a very cost effective machine for this, any help greatly appreciated.

  5. @Koala Kid, the only way to possibly run Photoshop on a PS3 was if it ran on LInux or if you ran a Windows or Mac OS emulator on Linux on the PS3. So essentially it might boil down to a PS3 running LInux running a Windows emulator to run Photoshop. The PS3 is powerful enough for it but the big problem is that Linux is no longer supported by PS3. It was taken out in a firmware update several months back.

  6. Pretty obvious when you look at third party titles in comparison.

  7. I think they forgetting about a little studio called Santa monica, after all they only made the best looking game ever…..GoW3

  8. lets not forget 3rd party titles that are starting to look like exclusives like vanquish and castlevania.
