Earlier this week Electronic Arts confirmed that NBA Elite ’11 would never see the light of day, something that had to have set the company back hundreds of millions of dollars, but despite that misfortune the company has posted quite a strong second quarter this year. Speaking with investors, CEO John Riccitiello and COO John Schappert both reported strong sales for all of the companies other large scale titles outside of Rock Band 3.
“We had another strong quarter, beating expectations both top and bottom line,” commented EA bigwig, John Riccitiello. “We credit our results to blockbusters like FIFA 11 and to innovative digital offerings like The Sims 3 Ambitions and Madden NFL 11 on the iPad.”
In case you were wondering, FIFA 11 has now sold over 8 million copies worldwide since release, bringing its lifetime total to well over 100 million. Furthermore, Medal of Honor shifted 2 million copies to date thus far and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 doubled the sales of the original with a whopping 6 million units.
These are very strong numbers for the publisher and almost makes the NBA Elite fiasco a drop in the pond when you really think about it. It’ll be interesting to see how it effects the basketball division going forward.
