Fumito Ueda: “I play a lot of FPS games”

Earlier today, Fumito Ueda expressed interest in developing a 2D title as well as potentially creating a first-person shooter. To me, this wasn’t anything odd as I could imagine after creating such gems like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian, you’d like a break with something new and fresh. However, when Ueda went on to say that he spends most of his free time playing FPS titles in general, I was genuinely surprised — I didn’t expect it.

Speaking with EDGE magazine, Ueda reveals that not only does he want to develop a FPS title, but that he also believes Ico and SotC didn’t sell well because they weren’t good enough titles.

“If I get the chance, there are things that I’d like to make or challenge myself with, yes.

“For instance, I’d like to make 2D games. Right now, that’s what I’d like to do – it may change tomorrow. Oh, and an FPS. Yes, I’d like to make an FPS. I play quite a lot of FPS games in my free time.”

We’ll have to see where Ueda goes from here, but I’m sure if Team ICO decided to deliver a game within a different genre, niche fanboys and the like would be all over it. I’d imagine a Team ICO developed-FPS would be the equivalent of a Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan masterpiece of art, direction and drama.
