David Cage, creator and spearhead behind such iconic titles as Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) and Heavy Rain has stuck by his bold claim that Sony not only has the best console, but the best studios in the world. Speaking with CVG at GDC this year, Cage didn’t hold back on how he felt about the console manufacturer one bit and had no trouble expressing his loyalty for the company.
Oddly, Cage has also stated that due to the success of Heavy Rain and support that Sony supplied throughout the process of development and marketing that Quantic Dream, the development team behind the title, has no plans to develop for any other console in the near future.
“We have an exclusive relationship with Sony,” Cage told CVG. “The relationship on Heavy Rain has been fantastic. They trusted us from day one, supported us all the way through. It was really a very risky project [for them] and they never let us down.
“Being a part of a company with what are probably the best studios in the world is something really pleasant for us. We’re happy to continue this relationship and create content for the PlayStation brand. But they fund our projects, so we’re staying exclusive to PlayStation.
“I am very loyal in general – or I try to be. I know that trusting me is always a big risk and when people do, I feel like I owe them something. It’s not just because I want to thank them, though. We have a relationship that works, we’re excited by the platform – we think it’s the best platform out there. We’re glad to continue to work this way.”
Surprisingly, you may also have Cage to thank for how well Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games have performed with the Uncharted and Killzone franchises as well. Not to say that Cage is the driving force behind them or the lead, but that Cage sharing his experience and knowledge of the PS3 with those developers obviously had an impact in each franchise at some point.
“We talk to Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Guerrilla, Media Molecule – all these great studios,” he added. “We talk about technology, best practice, how we do things – we share experience and expertise. I think that’s of real value for everybody.”
I’m excited to see what Cage has in store next for PlayStation 3 owners and apparently it’s going to be an emotional war game. While the genre is overplayed by now, it’ll be interesting to see Cage’s take on the entire affair.
I do not understand what you mean by overplayed? Please explain if you would.
I think it means that titles of the war genre are played extremely often compared to other video games.
