With The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings now shipped on PC, Polish developer CD Projekt has shown interest in bringing the magical RPG to consoles, however if the team moves ahead with the port it won’t be “dumbed down” with cutbacks.
Speaking with Nowgamer, Witcher 2 senior producer Tomasz Gop stated that with Witcher 2 now out and getting good remarks on PC, if the studio wants to develop a console port, all focus can go into making it specifically for PS3 and Xbox 360.
“We’ve already done a PC game that doesn’t suck,” said Gop. “In that way we kinda know where we’re at. That’s why we started off with what we feel good at.”
“If we’ll make a console version in the future, I’m pretty sure it won’t be dumbed down. Not in the case of The Witcher 2 – there’s no need and no way for us to simplify the game for consoles.”
This would not be the studios first time developing on consoles, as CD Projekt was working on The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf for PS3 and Xbox 360 before canning the project to move onto Witcher 2. According to a talk with Eurogamer last month, Gop revealed that a console version of Witcher 2 had been made for a proof of concept, although they had not moved fully into production until the PC release was finished.
“After we release The Witcher 2 on PC we just sit down with Excel or Project and make schedules, make plans,” said Gop. “Then we will be totally glad to announce what is coming out; we know what team we have, what capacity we have, but we still have to plan out the amount of work. Then we will tell the world what we plan to do and ‘it will be that day of release’, potentially.”
Perhaps by the time E3 rolls around, CD Projekt will have something more solid to announce. Personally, I was excited about the Rise of the White Wolf title until it was cancelled, so if a console port of Witcher 2 comes to light, I will be a very happy RPG gamer.
