Lead by American McGee and art director Ken Wong, Spicy Horse, a western developer based in Shanghai, used separate art teams to create each world, sometimes using a single artist to helm characters and worlds that they felt would best fit their style.
Speaking with TVG, American McGee revealed that there would be a large amount of diversity in Madness Returns in terms of the visual look and presentation.
“You could almost imagine that each successive domain carries its own theme and art style, and I think it’s one of the key values of the product that from moment to moment, hour to hour you’re always going to be seeing something new; witnessing something different,” said McGee.

“We did a lot of surreal stuff with the art presentation, the sound, and sometimes with the construction of a map.”
“I mean, there are some areas of the game that you get into where the levels are turned into large scale puzzles that Alice is trying to move through and navigate.”
Diving into the gothic elements of Victorian life, the art team has definitely created an iniquitous, yet alluring world, full of strange characters. Alice: Madness Returns releases June 14 in the US, June 16 in Europe for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Also, be sure to remember EA announced that the original Alice game will be included with Madness Returns on all platforms. Any fans or newcomers looking to play through the original, EA is giving away for free.
