Now that PlayStation Move and Microsoft’s Kinect have been flooding into living rooms across the world, it’s time for the devices to do something that Nintendo really hasn’t done over the course of this generation — and that is, to appeal to the core gamer. In case you haven’t noticed, now that Nintendo’s console has reached its peak, the console is struggling to make the same impact it once did and that should mainly be placed on the fact that it doesn’t appeal to core gamers like its two competitors does.
Unfortunately, if Microsoft or Sony plans on being successful beyond these opening months with its own motion technology, both are going to have to grab the core gamers by the horns and reel them in. After all, that is where the true money is. Soccer moms will always be content with what they paid for at launch and then just enjoy that for as long as possible. Konami’s president, Shinji Hirano, feels the same way.
“These two systems are quite successful, and both are trying to get into the ‘Wii area’ for the casual gamers,” Hirano told Forbes in an interview. “But the real success is in how they can develop content for the core gamer.”
While fanboys have constantly felt that both devices are geared towards casuals more so than anything else, it goes without saying that if these same fans could embrace either product in ownership more so than in name, it would do wonders for the respective companies bottom line. Will Sony and Microsoft be able to adopt the core gamer full time with their devices? Well, that remains to be seen.
