A new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 could release as early as October 2022. Multiple leakers have indicated that the next game in the Modern Warfare series, which was refreshed in 2019, will likely see an official reveal sometime in Summer 2022. Notably, whether or not the release date falls on October 2022 is reportedly dependent on the performance of another title, Call of Duty: Vanguard, which has seemingly failed to meet Activision’s expectations.
Why is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 releasing early?
According to reliable industry insider Tom Henderson, there is a high chance that Activision and Infinity Ward will reveal Modern Warfare 2 sometime this summer. More importantly, there are apparently some “rumblings” that the Modern Warfare 2 release date could fall in October 2022. Henderson states that this is largely due to the poor sales performance of the recently-released Call of Duty: Vanguard.
As expected, it’s looking like this year’s Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare II (2022), will be revealed in the summer.

Another reliable leaker, @TheMW2Ghost, later corroborated Henderson’s information:
Yep. I have heard the same on this regarding reveal and release. https://t.co/wf40OjfvTR

While Vanguard topped the PlayStation’s download charts in November 2021, Spider-Man: Miles Morales — a game that has been out for 13 months — beat out the title in total PS5 sales just a month afterward. In fact, Vanguard sold 40% fewer units in the first month compared to past releases. Not a good look for a franchise that generally relies on strong first-month sales.
Some point to a saturation in the first-person shooter market. In addition to Battlefield 2042 which released in the same month, Call of Duty Warzone — the franchise’s free-to-play battle royale game — also boasts a significant player base. Regardless, Henderson also mentions that Modern Warfare 2‘s release will similarly come with a new Warzone map.
In other news, Respawn Entertainment is currently working on an unannounced FPS title set to release sometime in 2024 or 2025. The Hitman 3 Freelancer mode is also set to release this Spring and add riskier roguelike missions to the game.
