Sony is set to take full control of mobile device maker Sony Ericsson.

The company is to pay Swedish manufacturer Ericsson $1.05 billion for its 50% share in the joint venture, which was first established in October 2001.

“We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment,” said Howard Stringer, Sony Chairman and CEO.

It will no doubt affect the future of PlayStation Certified devices, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and the Sony P and S tablets, and some news outlets even expect Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld console to benefit from the deal.
