New subscription-based revenue stream planned for PSN

During a recent Investors conference, Sony discussed an upcoming subscription service for the PlayStation Network that will create a new stream of revenue for the company. While some may choose to associate this with Qore, it’s highly unlikely that it has anything to do with the already established subscription-based magazine. Considering the slide pulled from the press release is specific enough to label is a new revenue stream, you can pretty much rule out Qore entirely.

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” said the SCE boss.

“Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”

It’s logical to assume Sony may start offering a premium alternative to the service already on-hand that is similar to that of Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold, however, I think that it will not include the exclusive feature of being able to play online. What do you guys think the new line of revenue will be?

  6. I mean it’s not anything to get all riled up over, Everything that is free now will be free later, the only thing is what are they going to consider to be premium content.

  7. @nile

Are you kidding me, playing online should be free and will stay that way. they are adding more streaming options or micro trans it looks like. if it comes to pay to play online bump that…..also note IT WILL LAG THE SAME.

  9. With paying for PSN we’ll probably get more features…all Id like would be Party Chat that coming from XBL. Yet I can live with out that.

Still never liked the fact of paying for online back when I had my Xbox 360. Hell on PS2 online I never payed a cent for when I played the Socom games. Please REMAIN FREE

  11. Im guessing cross game chat will be included with this PREMIUM …

  12. I don’t give a fuck for cross game chat anyway,as long as I can play free online it’s OK with me.

  13. PSN will be free… always free… Sony cannot go back on something they have been singing for many years….

What they will do is add some EXTRA premium services that you have to pay for to use… pretty simple guys

  14. Correct, if we still have the option of an “updated” service such as PSN, I’m fine with having an optional subscription option.

If you don’t want it, keep playing for free.

If they doo create a premium one, it had BETTER NOT take anything away from the standard one, i mean, everyone knows Xbox silver is just glorified msn, but if i cant do everything im doing now on my playstation for free if/when they introduce a premium one, it may never be used again. DX
