3D Gaming coming to PS3s in 2010

Last year at the Consumer Electronics Show, Sony revealed its plans to unroll a 3D gaming service while demoing Gran Turismo 5: Prologue as the guinea pig for the idea. While attending the event, I got some hands-on time with the new technology as well as the opportunity to check out Ice Age in 3D and I was left surprisingly impressed. Not only did it add an entirely new element to the racing genre, but it made me feel more submerged into the experience.

Today, Sony has revealed that they will be rolling out its 3D gaming experience some time in the next fiscal year (scheduled to end March 31, 2011). I’ve included an excerpt below.

Expand 3D-related product businesses in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011
• Engage Sony’s group-wide assets from content production to display devices and game to make available a wide variety of attractive content and hardware, and drive the creation of new 3D markets.
• Launch 3D-related products for the home, including TV, Blu-ray DiscTM players/recorders and 3D gaming on PlayStation®3 in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011.
• Provide solutions for 3D content production, distribution and theatrical projection to lead the field in broadcast and professional businesses.
• Target revenue from 3D-related products of more than 1 trillion yen (excluding content) in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.

3D gaming could end up as a niche feature much like motion control design, however, I think it’ll be a big hit for those specific gamers who enjoy that type of thing.

  1. i heard that sonys 3d technology is a completely new form of 3d imaging where unlike the old 3d effects, picture quality does not reduce
    is that true?

  2. This is awesome.

  3. K-grim yeah, but you still have to use funky glasses though. Although, these ones are like glass, they aren’t red/blue only.

Only question I got, will this work on most TV’s or do you need a full-HD one?

  4. i hope this 3d deal isnt one of the things they meant in the whole subscription thingy
