Professor Blackbuster Critic is back this week with an entirely new video and look at both Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming motion technology. While this topic has been beaten to death by many journalists around the industry, it’s never too late for a good debate over the two.
In this episode, BBC discusses which motion control has the most potential for gamers on an overall level. Don’t think he’s taking it easy on Sony either as the Professor points out a severe flaw that will prevent Sony’s motion technology from being successful. As always, feel free to comment below with your opinion and to debate other freely.
We’ve included the video below.
@KanameTousen
I totally agree with you.
Also I want to point out to everyone that the “wand” is still in development stages and sony might, if they’re smart, just add a joystic and buttons on the wand so you never know. Other than that, it is basically the wii mote but more accurate due to the Eye being more capable of picking up your movements than the wii’s motion bar.
Now to answer BBC, obviously the “wand” has more potential in gaming than Natal ever will but what concerns me is will it be more of a good enough substitute for the controller, better, or worse? For example, in FPS’s even if they did add a joystic and some buttons on the “wand” will gameplay be equal or the same? I mean sure the accuracy will be by far better with the “wand” than the controller but will you be able to move your character as well as you can with the controller? Personally I can’t see the actual character controls being on the same level or better with the “wand” than with the controller but I would love for Sony to prove me wrong.
I also want to say that even though the “wand” is certainly more capable of converting wii owners and potential wii customers over to the PS3 than Natal is to converting them to the 360, it won’t do well unless they come with a package bundle with the Eye and “wand(s)”, as well as selling them all individually (which I’m sure they will but you never know). It may not also do well with present PS3 owners because of preference and other things. For I personally already love the Dual Shock 3, and I definitely want the Eye, but although I’m certainly interested in the “wand” I’m also not sure if it’s a must have since the DS3 already more than gets the job done.
I’ll most likely get it if it comes in a bundle if I don’t already have the Eye, but if I do get it I don’t want it to collect dust you know. I would want to enjoy it to the fullest along with the PS3, it’s other add-ons,and features π
Ahh I meant will gameplay be equal or better with the “wand” XD
To be honest i can see way more potenitnal for the motion wands..if they perfected the graphics and managed to find a way of movement then i can see this as a huge turning point in gaming.
I agree a 100%. You said the thing that came up my mind the first time I saw Natal and the Wands in action. I think the Wands will blow Natal outoff the water. The control scheme of the wands could be tight, when the Natal controls probably be sloppy. No one likes sloppy controlls. I play games to have fun. Game characters has to do what I want them to do.
BTW you look a bit like Dave Capelle(in no way an insult)
agreed, but one question:
“Donβt think heβs taking it easy on Sony either as the Professor points out a severe flaw that will prevent Sonyβs motion technology from being successful.”
which is?
BBC , I only have one thing to say……and that is you’re completely right. Also given the fact that the things you wanted to see from Natal can also be done with the PSeye. According to information so far, the “wand” launches spring and “Natal” launches November. Can’t wait for CES2010 because both are suppose to be showing off some actual games. I thought you should’ve have mentioned one key thing. That is that almost every third party game on the Wii could be ported to ps3 with the wand. That’s all they did for the RE5 code, but that wasn’t the point. The point is that, GAMES,are what’s going to decide it. Sony has the largest internal team out of the big three and they are always picking up companies like Media Molecule. Microsoft has one of the weakest even when they bought RARE.
@TheDJAtomika
The lack of an actual analog stick, similar to the pspgo, would cause some setbacks for the wand. I didn’t find it too flattering that he had to use the DualShock3, but like i said earlier, they just ported over the Wii’s interface. The purpose of the demo was to see how quick they could implement the wand’s code on existing games. Microsoft isn’t stupid though, they launching Nov. because they want to see how successful the Ps3 wand is going to be. They’ll probably announce an controller similar to the wii and “wand”.
natal is just extening the life of 360, thats why its going for casual market, nad with its good online it will be fun interface. but you want to play some hardcore (most abused term in gaming can you define it)game on it… HAHAHAHA
wii got 45 degree wide angle not that great but ok. paint thing was stupid,For natal fps you should be in ball LOL, what will be football in natal ? Okami will be WOOOOW, true about analog thing
The motion wands looks like a Super Wii, but even that in and of itself would be awesome. Netal could do some awesome virtual reality games, IF Microsoft doesn’t screw up. I prefer the PS3, but i don’t want the 360 to keep failing. I miss the Super Nintendo vs Genesis console wars, back when the competition was FIERCE to the point where most gamers had both because choosing one over the other was like choosing a $1,000,000 in 100 dollar bills, or $1,000,000 in 50 dollar bills… ^__^
oh, and what was the “severe flaw” that the PS3 wand had? Not that I want it to be flawed, but U didn’t point it out…
So let me see If i get this straight:
It’s bad that microsoft has showed hardly anything about Natal even though it won’t be launched until like November, but it’s good that Sony hasn’t showed ANYTHING about the Wand? not a single game not a single showcase that wasn’t just a “possible videogame” being controlled by the creator
Natal Running Katamari and burnout is not impressive but the Wand running a “possible RTS” is impressive?
Yeah, I mean it’s not like you could possibly use your hands in an RTS game /sarcasm
Finally:
How is the sword swinging impressive? The Wiimote’s been doing that for ages
Natal looks ideal for that as well
Other than the fact that the Wand will have buttons and the fact that natal has a 1 second lag this was like hearing a 5 year old defending their favourite toy
Type your message here…
wow i have no idea how that happened and natal will end up killing people
@Devante Blood
BBC pointed out that he didn’t like the dildo design of the motion wand. But you have to forgive Sony. They probably want to attract girl gamers.
@Blinky- Yes it’s dominating in sales but Wiis everywhere are collecting dust….save for the occasional good title
@stika
If you paid more attention to the video, he stated Sony showed it was compatable with certain games that are already out such as RE5, LBP, Flower, High Velocity Bowling, and EyePet. That’s 5 demostrations of what it can do.
Natal couldn’t run a RTS, at least not like the “wand” can. You need high precision in order to do what the “wand” did with that RTS sample. MS’s demonstration of how you have to splash paint everywhere indicates Natal is lacking precision. If it was precise they would’ve used a paint brush or something.
The sword swing is very impressive because once again the precision is amazingly accurate. I haven’t seen a game on the wii that can do what this sample did, it’s usually pre-rendered actions such as if you move the wii mote mostly vertically, horizontally, or diagnally the character will do a corresponding action but it doesn’t actually move with the wii mote it just responds to particular movements from it. In other words the movements are like buttons. Vertical swing is A, Horizontal is B, and Diagnal is Z, and each button activates a certain action.
If you move the wii mote in let’s say a circular movement, the character won’t do anything unless that movement (button) was programmed into the game to do something, or it’ll mistaken it for a vertical, or so, slash.
The “wand” showed that the eye tracks it’s every movement and displays it on screen, so you can move the “wand” in any fasion and the character wil move the same (at least the arms will).
Natal would do what wii sword games have been doing but maybe a little better. Swing your arms in a vertical, horizontal, or diagnal motion and it’ll do the same. It doesn’t have the precision and reaction speed to do what the “wand” did with a sword, for once again their painting demonstration shows this.
Nice to put this up on a PS site.
BTW everybody loves reading fanboys arguing so keep it up.
ever wonder what the bottom of avatar’s shoe looks like? BAM THERE IT IS!
This is a very agreeable video, i feel the same way, where even though Natal may have some more non gaming potential, like user login and stuff, ps3 motion controller has more GAMING potential, which is what the video was trying to prove. Also, i always wondered why everyone is so impressed by Natal? I never understood it, because i have an EyeToy and a PlayStation Eye that basically do the same thing. Is Kinetic for EyeToy, and EyeToy chat, and Antigrav not real full body motion controlled games? Also, if you search up every tech demo of the eyetoy, that is basically what Natal is. There is a tech demo where Rick from Sony R&D is actually playing an early version of something that looks similar to the Microsoft ricochet game, scanning things, and showing body tracking. Its like Microsoft took all the Sony research, and tech demos, and made an upgraded EyeToy for 360, as the PS Eye is capable of most of the things Natal can do.
Very good points you pointed out
Okay for some reason or another my links were not posted
that is bs

here’s the video with the update
I’d say the best solution with current or nearly current technology would be a combination of the two ideas: Project Natal’s potential for facial and whole body recognition combined with the accuracy of Sony’s wand would have an inconceivable amount of gaming potential. Also, instead of a wand, a pair of glove controllers would be best.
inuboy@ lol still crying from that beatdown that bbc gave to you few weeks ago? ok ok then good oh still having trouble getting a girlfriend? and how is that liquid ocealot takeing over the world thing going? ooooooohhhhhh not going so good there buddy you {EPIC FAILURE}.
Wow, Natal is going to cause crazy injuries. Imagine holding your arms out like that driving Burnout for four hours?
BTW. That avatar looked like it was possessed!!!
@ O-EXTRA In case you didn’t notice, When sony used the Wand to control your character in resident evil 5, the person controlling the character was using the Wand and the Dualshock 3 AT THE SAME TIME, how is this an improvment? All of the other games you mentioned weren’t the least bit impressive, hey, if Burnout and Katamari isn’t impressive then neither if Flower or Little Big Plannet
Riiight, Because the Wand was SO precise am I right? Remember in the E3 showing when they were trying to aim a bow to the left and the guy couldn’t move the bow for like 5 seconds? So there goes your high-precision
Everything I saw about the Wand so far could have been done just as well with the Wii, specially considering there’s a new Wii motion plus
.
I love the fact that you already know which one is more precise even though none of them are out, hell you. Specially when you say that the eye tracks the movement of the user….. huh… doesn’t natal actually use 3 cameras?
@ O-EXTRA Here, see for yourself how the Wand works with RE5:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/102/1027961p1.html
“You play with one hand holding the Wand and the other a Dual Shock 3. ”
What’s the point of owning a wand then?
inuboy@ yes you did and i recall you didn’t respond back to bbc about it and yeah it was funny to see your parents fighting your battles and it was funny as hell when that yahoo answers user respond to saying “you are probaly ugly” which is very true sorry it is truth and you will never be a bad boy a serial killer but not a bad boy and calling me a moronic fuck always makes me laugh because it shows you are dumb and imature so thank you and how about a nice cup of shut the fuck up
@O-EXTRA
“Other than that, it is basically the wii mote but more accurate due to the Eye being more capable of picking up your movements than the wiiβs motion bar.”
Just wanted to let you know that the Wii’s sensor bar has nothing to do with the motion. The motion is built inside the controller itself. The sensor bar just releases IR light for the pointer. That’s the only thing it is for. Anyways I’m probably alone in this but I don’t want Wii ports. I rather have brand new games and/or sequels to Wii games already out.
Good vid BBC. I’ve paid very little attention to these motion controls, I always thought they were gimmicky, but the idea of playing a Demon’s Souls type of game with two controls really makes this idea practical instead of some cheap novelty.
Great vid BBC. Let the debates begin. To me it doesn’t matter which one’s better. Competition is good for both. So whether you’re a xbox 360 or ps3 gamer, each one will push the OTHER (NaTal or ps wand) to be better than their rival. So we all win. Right at the moment JMHO the ps wand is ahead.
@stika
I never said the demonstration of those games were phenomenal, just that they showed it can be done since you were complaining that they didn’t show anything on any known games. At E3 they didn’t, but they did afterwards so please stop complaining. Also as I stated earlier, the wand is still in development so control for actual character movement might change, who knows but I hope it does.
Another thing, about the bow not being able to move, that was obviously a minor glitch at the moment and also has nothing to do with precision. Aiming falls under precision, not movement.
I explained why the sword swing was impressive and cannot be done by the wii. Although it does have 1:1 now with the motion plus it still does not have the precision the PS3 has with the Eye-wand combo.
Anyone who was watching the demonstration of the wand, and anyone who has or played a wii long enough, can tell which is more precise.
Also just because Natal is using more cameras doesn’t mean it has high precision. It’s tracking much larger objects, whether it’s your whole arm or your whole body, while the Eye is only tracking that ball of light on the wand. In other words think of it this way, who has more of a successful chance of picking up a penny, a giant or a human? It’s an extreme example but I’m hoping it’ll put what I said into a better perspective for you.
@Fayt Saratome
I’m not trying to attack you or anything but that’s exactly my point. The IR is what is pointing, or in other words aiming. The Eye can detect the wand’s position more precisely than the motion bar can detect the wii mote’s IR, and since it can detect it better it can therefor follow it better giving it more accuracy while moving or remaining static. This is basically what I meant in what I said. I’m sorry for the confusion but I was extremely tired when I typed that and didn’t feel like going into further detail in that statement. I also felt that it would be understood but I should’ve just explained myself better lol.
Natal and the motion wand both have potential, but Microsoft should forget this ‘you are the controller’ nonsense ASAP.
To play shooters, to move around an environment, you need to have something to press.
Both systems should have a controller and body motion detection.
Imagine an FPS, you are near a corner of a wall, holding up your wand or remote or whatever to aim. You tilt your head to the side, and look around the corner. The effect would feel fantastic. Both systems are capable of this as long as Sony pay attention to the body position, and Microsoft decide to add a Wii style controller.
I think this is good for hardcore gamers too. I also own a Wii, and besides the below average graphics, CoD World at War Wii is one of the best FPS I have played on any system, period. Using motion controll to aim the gun is so much easier than PS3 or 360, and feels and looks so natural.
Any system that can give you a wand, head tracking, and a pair of 3D glasses exclusively will destroy the competition. Forget ‘You are the controller’, it will be ‘You are IN the game’
I think the PS wand will be cool, however when it comes to what natal can do, I think it has already won,
Also, we really need to wait until there are some Natal demos that are not staged.
The Milo one was obviously staged… he was looking directly at her, turning his face to the side, but TV images are on a 2D plain. This is an illusion to make the viewer (us) think that he is looking at her. If the presentation was for her benefit, not ours, he would look straight.
The Burnout presentation was the same. They reused the same crash clips for multiple players. It was obviously cut together, and I was surprised they did it so badly. If you see the Natal avatar presentation it is a joke, it keeps jumping around as it loses track of his position.
I’m not saying Natal is bad, I’m just saying that they haven’t proven it’s speed or accuracy yet. They have a year to speed it up, otherwise it won’t be that useful.
The wand demonstration was really impressive. As a Wii Motionplus user, I can really appreciate the speed and accuracy of it. Motionplus is good, but it’s a pain to keep recalibrating it every few minutes. Wii Sports Resort is still a great game, and I actually lost weight playing the sword fighting section.
I agree with the professor that PS3 wand NEEDS an analog stick, but please don’t put it on the wand itself. Nintendo had the right idea with the nunchuck. Sony can just develop a simple analog controller and sell it as a pair with the wand, because using DS3 in the other hand sucks big time
BBC FAIL in this vid
Prof. Truth didn’t upload his weekly vid. i think his is dead :(….
If Natal can prove that virtual gaming is possible i.e. pretending to run as if it were a treadmill, ducking and weaving like Police 911 or that boxing game from the arcades, throwing punching, not so sure about climbing unless you move your arms up and down. So it will be interesting if Microsoft can pull it off, but if it only brings the same old tired up games that wii started it will fail. Now the wand does it really need a joystick well it could mix in natal with wii i.e. running, throwing punches, etc. The jury still out it could go either way.
Good news guys Prof. Truth isn’t dead π
but i think the dean is dead that’s why the site hasn’t been updated.
Good news guys the dean is alive π
he updated the site yay. can’t wait to see Prof. Truth vids.
gamepro did an interview with john koller and sony is working on something just like natal but john koller said the ps3 version was more advanced and it havent been talked allot but if anyone else know more abaut this please message me π
sorry for grammar issues π
wow!!! i just found an link to the interview in english!
http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/213252/sony-talks-2010-project-natal-and-wii-are-going-to-have-trouble/
hey man thank for the vid, my xbox 360 just died as most do, im off to buy a ps3!!!!!!!
Great vid. I have the PS2 eyetoy, but for some reason the space needed for Natal didn’t occur to me lol. I guess if you go with the wands, you can be closer than Natal. I also didn’t quite notice the delay in Natal before. I noticed more things such as it having depth perception problems.
Also with a wand, to go ‘running about a map’ they could just put in tilt programming. Tilt the wand to far to the right, you run to the right.
Oh, one more thing, the PS2 eyetoy picks up my dog’s tail (my dog is a 10 lbs yorkie). If it can pick up his tail it can certainly pickup a finger. Now for multiple fingers, I don’t know. However since the PS2 eyetoy can do that, it’s not too far of a strech for me to imagine Natal picking up fingers.
GO FUCK YOURSELF BLACKBUSTERFAGGOT… WHY DONT YOU GO FUCK YOUR BUTTBUDDY THE UNLEASHED 99 I THINK BOTH OF YOU SHOULD KILL EACH OTHER… FUCK YOU BITCH YOU FUCKING SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKk

Right about milo, my friends are trying to make natal seem better than sony move, and all they can say is MILO! why would i want to talk to someone in my screen? i have REAL FRIENDS. and i have a feeling that footballs games are really gonna cause some problems. i mean, cmon. if you want to do a really powerful shot, injury? i think so.
