The Blackbuster Special: Which motion control has more potential?

Professor Blackbuster Critic is back this week with an entirely new video and look at both Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming motion technology. While this topic has been beaten to death by many journalists around the industry, it’s never too late for a good debate over the two.

In this episode, BBC discusses which motion control has the most potential for gamers on an overall level. Don’t think he’s taking it easy on Sony either as the Professor points out a severe flaw that will prevent Sony’s motion technology from being successful. As always, feel free to comment below with your opinion and to debate other freely.

We’ve included the video below.

  1. nice vid blackbuster, keep up the good work on youtube AND psuni

  2. The bone snake you can make with the PSWAND looks awsome, you can even make it blow fire

    great video
    motion control ftw

  4. great video as always
personally motion controls dont mean anything to me anymore thanks to the wii overstimulating them with theri crap, the only actual motion controls games i liked were mario galaxy, and twilight princess.

i would love to see if the wony wand can be utilized in an rpg game such as hack and slash games.

  5. Nice video, Man I didnt ever see all that awesome PS3 motional controller gameplay before.

I didnt really think much of it but it just looks completely awesome!

  6. Awesome video Blackbuster!

Can’t wait to play Demon’s Souls with the motion control if that would be possible.

  7. You never bend a nail, great video.

  8. Well in all honesty I think Sony motion controller is more compatible w/ more genres.
Considering the Sony motion controller and the Wii Remote look and run exactly the same 3rd party Wii Ports like The Conduit, House of the Dead, Ghost Squad, Red Steel, and many more can make a nice transition to PS3.
Natal will do really well when it comes to making mini games like XBLA games for example but it could lack in the porting of older gamers because in order to put that motion controller functionality into Natal Microsoft would have to go back and rewrite the code.
Unless you have a game made from the ground up on Natal it’s not gonna make it into the game.
Only thing I’m a little bit worried about is the price of both motion controllers and the fact that maybe in the future these controls might be forced on every game whether that game needs it or not much like online multiplayer.
Overall I’m open minded but I’m gonna stick w/ the Sony controller right now because it has been proven to work w/ games.
ex.) Resident Evil 5, Little Big Planet, Flower, etc. = Just like you said.
Still nothing ca beat the analog controller. IMO.

  9. I love playstation but remember with things like milo and the paintings on Natal it’s a TECH demo to show what is capable of.(which isn’t much).

  10. great vid BBC as always. i totally agree with you. the PS wand has a lot more potential & can still hold a lot of hardcore gamers & still bring in casuals as well where as Natal i only see it catering toward casuals cuz i dont see how it can work with the hardcore games on the 360

  11. DeynatheTaggerung December 19, 2009 @ 12:31

I’ve seen Natal’s gameplay vids before, and like back then I’m still not thrilled with it.

But this is the first time I’ve seen the PS3’s wand, and I………..I…………….

    I CAME.

    That is all.

  12. Pretty interesting motion controls from both Natal and the Wand. But how long will people be interested in it? When the Wii first came out everyone was in awe and had fun with it. Now no one really cares about it. Normal controllers will always dominate.

  13. @12 you do know that the Wii is the most succesful console this generation right ?

  14. Agree with this vid completely. Just tired of fanboys thinking Natal will change gaming as we know it, and destroy any boost the PS3 recieved with the release of the Slim. They are just hyping themselves up for a big disappointment. Natal is only geared towards the casuals with it’s limited abilities. And let’s face it, the Wii has already captured that market. At least Sony has aimed at both the cauals and hardcore market. Though in the end, they both will mainly sell to those who already own a system, bringing only a small amount of new costumers in.

I definitely will be buying the Wands if there is some cool software at launch. Hell, they should make sure they package a slightly enhanced version of the E3 Demo with every Wand. I would buy it then.

  15. Great vid BBC. and just wanted to point out that the Sony Wand name might be “GEM”. I think both motion controllers can be good if they actually worked the way they are advertised. to me, so far, I see that Natal failed to do that (that’s why I now name it “FATAL) while in the other hand, GEM was shown in a tech demo live on stage which was pretty convincing to me and more appealing than “BOOM! there it is!” XD

  16. haha great video blackbuster!! you rock man

this is a very very good video.

  17. Natal because I can just Pick up a Wii-mote and the same Shit the PS3 wand can do…..

  18. DUDE…SHUT THE FUCK UP..YOUR TRYING TO SAY PS3 MOTION WAND IS BETTER THAN NATAL???GET THE FUCK OUT HER..NOW I MUST SAY THE POINT YOU BROUGHT UP WERE VALID BUT YOU SKIPPED OVER THE MILO DEMO..WHICH ALL THE EXCITING STUFF FOR NATAL WAS..YOU MISSING THE VOICE CONTROL ASPECT OF IT. GET SONY’S DICK OUT YOUR MOUTH AND SEE WHATS IN FRONT OF YOU..AN IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY YOU WERE THRILLED ABOUT NATAL IN YOUR E3 REVIEW OF MICROSOFT

  19. Of course the Sony motion wand has more potential, but its the idiots that wont realize that. It’s almost guaranteed that natal will out sell The Sony motion wand. Lol I remember being little and wasting 90 dollars on hey you pikachu, I can feel the same thing happening for those that buy natal for reasons other than testing it(as in expecting a quality gaming experience).

  20. @BGKID15 #18,
Really? You think MILO is the most exciting thing for Natal? Lemme tell you something about Milo: 1. We have yet to actually SEE Milo. All we’ve seen was the acted demo VIDEO at E3 and the FEW journalist that have claimed to meet Milo, but were not allowed to take any video. 2. Its being made by the very man who is infamous for hyping every single thing he does. 3. Milo is made for 360 users who lack REAL friends. XD So I can see why you’re excited by it.
And if you were paying attention, when I was talking about what I wanted to see from Natal, I did mention the voice controls. But is voice controls really that amazing? Its not new dude. Just because Microsoft put their name on it doesnt mean it hasnt been done before. Lets not forget that NINTENDO already had their chance with Natal technology during the development of the Wii and they REJECTED IT due to, what should be, OBVIOUS REASONS. ;P
And lastly, yes I was excited about Natal in the E3 Review, but that was before I really had time to rewatch and digest what was actually shown, and obviously before Sony showed what they had. XD Nice try buddy, but your “ALL CAPS” teary eyed rage fails. XD

  21. I have an xbox360, and at first, i thought natal was a great idea. but now that i have watched your video, i see that i wouldn’t be able to use Natal, since my xbox is in my room, plus the games that could be played on natal are limited since you cannot move. the ps3’s motion technology though looks like an improved wii remote and it looks really good.

  22. I really liked the video. I think both look good, but honestly project NATAL is the infancy of a revolution. There is no doubt that its going to be rough at first, but when its completed its going to do some cool shit. Sony is perfecting the wii and it looks cool dont get me wrong I just dont think you can compare the ps3 magic wand to a whole new system idea.

  23. Alright two things on this
The natal is a repackaged version of the Playstation eye

-the wand will beat it because of “BAM!”http://dashboardspy.com/img/tom-cruise-dashboard-glove.jpg it could evovle into this if used right and is pixel prefect.

-While the Natal is cool it is doing everything we saw the playstaiton eye doing 3 YEARS AGO, from scanning objects(eye of judgment cards) to nearly motion capturing the movements (the fact you can interact with the eye of judgment cards a little)

everyone says Natal’s the future when I see it for what it really is the next playstation eye/eyetoy aka it will get some support at first and still have support later on but it will be a small feature

  24. Xbox360 = 1 core processor + 1 microphone 16bit + 1 camera 30fps + 1 IR camera 30fps (both must sync)
    PS3 = 8 core processor + 1 camera 60 (120fps on progressive mode) + wand (but wand is only software based add-on)

Yeah the PSeye can be tweaked up to 120fps from the regular 60fps. So today PSeye games only use 50% of PSeyes capacity. While the Natal cameras need to sync betwean each others and in the same time read of your voice. Natal will be so slow and laggy that there is no need to get over from Wii to Natal. PSeye and the wand will be so accurate and fast, that WiiPlus add-on’s will look like a joke.

  25. blah I meant new footage of NEW GAMES BEING MADE FOR IT

  26. honstly the wond or w/e its called = the wii remote same shit different day.
Natal brings voice captureing AI understanding what you say to them, the emotions that milo presented ect.
So to be honset with you ps3 fan boys shut the fuck up ur product is exactly like the wii accept your putting a playstaion label on it.

And by the way im not a fan boy i have both consols and i enjoy both consols i dont have a fav one i just think ps3 idea is ganna fail really bad.

  27. @ 26 you can have both consoles and still be a fanboy you know

  28. BBC preach brother keep up the good work

  29. Great video!!! Had no idea about Sonys mtion wand thingy, it looks awesome!!!! Resident evil 5 and Little big planet would be so much fun 😀

  30. now that you’ve gave me all these details, i’ll go for motion sensor

  31. PS Gem needs a PS eye, and 2 wands. This is going to be pretty expensive I think, and without a joystick, and even buttons, many games designs that could works great on it (like Okami, though i don’t supports that port, seen as it’ll add so little to the game) probably wouldn’t work. And the pointing on it isn’t going to be as accurate as IR either, so I can’t see FPS games working on it.
Well, I definitely think PS Gem is going to have more gaming potential, and have better software for it, but I’m not convinced it’ll be worth whatever it costs. Though Natal is very ..um.. interesting, and I hope it’ll be awesome, and I’m probably going to get it.

  32. Sony’s motion dil- …. thing ftw ! totally agree with everything you said, natal is gonna suck

  33. Lol, i lawled so hard at the part where the xbox guy (whatever his name is) said “Did you ever wonder what the bottom of your avatar’s shoe looks like” and did the position, looked like the avatar was having a “virtual seizure”. Great video btw, awesome way you make your videos with facts and opinions mixed together.

  34. The initial thing about the PS3 Wands were that they didn’t have analogue sticks, so there was no way to move the character. They showed that it was easily done on Resident Evil 5 so that you could use the controller as well, but that was a bit of a shite demonstration. No one wants to do that because of how awkward it would be.

Then I heard somewhere about Sony talking about peripherals for analogue sticks and different buttons and so on for the wands? Was that just hearsay or of factual grounds?

Anyway, I’ve never liked the look of Natal. I don’t like racing games, and party games get boring when you’re not … Well … At a party. The only way to be able to play proper games with them is if you have the controller as well, and that means that Natal will take a little backseat role taking on really menial tasks. Like your theories, the facial recognition in Fable, or in conversation in RPGs, but I don’t know if that’s worth £100 …

Brilliant video! Looking forward to a lot more. And your co-op channel’s gonna be great.

  35. Natal is basically like an over-priced eyetoy,am i right??

  36. StudytheSequence December 20, 2009 @ 10:31

Looks great. Well the PSWand does. I was arguing with my Xbox fanboy friend yesterday about this very topic. I think I’ll just send this video his way. =P

  37. Here’s a quote from sony.

“.. Shooters and sports games… they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint. We look at motion control as being that much more than what exists on the market. The Holy Grail of gaming is placing you as a consumer into the game physically.”

  38. The PSWand looks promising. I think shooters would run real pretty well with it. Can you imagine, MW2 with the PSWand? better aiming and more headshots anyone?

  39. I hope the GEM, wand whatever it’s called does well because it looks far more powerful than the Wii Motion+, Natal I hope they don’t screw this up doing the stuff you talked about doing in Fable would be awesome.

  40. Great vid man!!

  41. I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP SAYING ITS THE SAME THING AS A WII, IT IS A LITTLE BIT BUT YOU ARE GETTING MOTION CONTROL WITH PS3 GRAPHICS AND GAMES WE KNOW HOW GREAT THE PS3 GRAPHICS ARE COMPARED TO THE OTHER TWO CONSOLES.

    THE WAND HAS MORE POTENTIAL,

  42. Nice vid as always. All Natal is a Playstation eye with pedophile simulator. The wands have a lot of potential but I hope they come up with a different design.

  43. GreenDragonXIII December 20, 2009 @ 15:18

Thanks, BBC. Definitely cleared up a lot of questions I had on the things. I’ll always be controllers 100%, but dat motion wand.

    HNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHH

    Keep it up, Blackbuster.

  44. Not bad. I wait till both of them are released before making a statement.

  45. To all 360 fanboys. The Wand and the Wiimote are in a sense, the same. Many of you say the Wii failed because nobody liked motion controls, untrue.

The Wii was and still is inaccurate, think about it, why would you want to play a game where you swung controller left and your avatar went up? Not fun is it.

The game doesn’t have that many appealing hardcore games, particularly when it comes to action and fps and those are the most popular genres as of now. So if it doesn’t have the games you would like to play(I.E:Mass Effect, Killzone 2), then there is no point in buying it correct?

PS3 and the PSWand fix all of these problems, Thus the reason it will be succesful.

What we’ve seen from Natal is microsoft staff demonstrations, but notice how slow they were moving during and then there was still a delay. Fail.
Natal isn’t compatible with action, fps, rts, fight, puzzle or sports.

    Nuff said.

  46. I think the true power of the wand is its pin point accuracy and it’s little to no lag ( at least in the presentation). The writing the guys did in the demo was sick, you might need practice with it but it’s still amazing to be that good with a motion controller. I have a wii and just clicking on menu is annoying at times, so this is a major step up. Also i really want to use the wand in pixel shooter and other PSN games, it would be epic

  47. You make a lot of sense BBC. i had been thinking on a lot of those points…. but lets see. i personally think that sony will have to bring a few innovative games to lead the way so that the others can follow suit

  48. LOL

painting, woman playing the ball game.

  49. I believe the PS3 MOTION WAND has more potential but, isn’t that stealing from the wii, i mean look at the thing

a clear rip off of nintendo’s wii mote though id probably prefer that instead of a wii mote

  50. Just so you guys know factually:
    PS3 Wand: Gyroscope + Accelerometer
Wiimote + Wiimotion Plus: Gyroscope + Accelerometer + Buttons

0_o. Thats just factually. Plus, if any of you guys are really willing to make the jump that the fps genre will be expanded upon on the PS3 motion wand, you’re out of your mind. WIth the current lack of many buttons or even an announced analog stick, you can kiss any hopes of a better fps experience than wii goodbye. Furthermore, the main reason people don’t play fps on wii is because they call the controls awkward after the first attempt after playing dual analog for 5 years. Play with wii controls consistently for a year and then come back.

Oh, and on the topic of ‘better more hardcore games’ released for PS3 motion wand compatability, please explain why a 3rd party dev would put an fps on this new motion wand and not the more aged wii controller / nunchuk set up? I can’t see one. And no, ‘graphics’ isn’t a reason. A reason would be that the wand has a better 1 to 1 acceptance, but that can’t be true with the wii motion plus completing the jigsaw puzzle (accelerometer + gyroscope.) Anyways, thats enough for this comment.
